In light of discussion questioning Aya Mikage's worthiness from people more familiar with the series, I am rescinding my vote in support of her.

Wow. From your description, this chap really seems like the kind of guy that someone could look up to. I'm not going to cast a vote in support yet, since I'm not particularly fond of the notion of voting for a character from a show that I haven't seen, but I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for Gun Frontier, and maybe I'll be able to check out a few episodes before this tournament is up. |

Dub or sub. Granted, the subbed episodes only go up to 5. |

Gun Frontier is a very weird series, a series with some bizare contrasts. For example, there is a ton of violence and death and nudity in it, but there's no blood at all, ever, and apparantly the women of Gun Frontier don't have nipples, so it made those scenes very weird.
Also, the show definitely has something of a comedic air to it, and wasn't meant to be taken entirely seriously, but it was so morbid at times with all the death and spoiler[the unsatisfying and dark ending] that it was hard for me to really appreciate it as a comedy or light-hearted adventure, but hard to view as a dark and serious adventure either. I watched it at first because it was a Harlock related anime, and I've heard very good things about some of the Captain Harlock shows, but never seen any. Ironically enough, the character of Harlock in Gun Frontier didn't really stand out to me all that much, and I found myself much more interested in Tochiro. Tochiro doesn't shout out "hero" at first, but as I watched more of the series, his herioc qualities did become fairly apparant, hence why I nominated him. It's not a series I'd highly recommend, but it's not one I'd tell you to stay away from either. It's short, free, and the Dub is fairly decent in my view, so it can't hurt to check it out at least. |

I'll throw in my support of Asato Tsuzuki of Descendants of Darkness. It's been awhile since I viewed this series, but I recall him being heroic enough to deserve a spot.

The night's update has been posted, current through this post.
With Sentire's vote we have 128 candidates with a score of 2+. I now consider the tournament roster to be full, but I will allow one more day to see if any of the 1-score characters can garner enough late support to "bump" one of the 2-score characters. Those who wish to try to influence the seeding process can also cast votes for higher-scoring characters; realistically speaking, though, anyone with a score of less than 9 is unlikely to be one of the 16 seeds. The final update will come around 11 p.m. forum time on Friday. |

Nominations and voting for the Best Hero/Heroine Tournament are now closed.
The final list of participants will be up within moments on the first post. Since no further votes were lodged, everyone who had a score of 2+ made the cut. I am going to be busy with a convention this weekend, so I will likely not be able to post the brackets before Sunday night at the earliest. If someone is willing to run a Mini-Game (haven't heard yet from ccdx if he wants to continue in that capacity or not), entries for that will start Monday or Tuesday. Projected start time for the tournament will be Monday March 23rd at 11 p.m. forum time. (This will bump back to midnight if someone ever gets around to adjusting the forum clock for DST.) Also, I'm going to need Character Guide write-ups for all 128 characters, and I'd like to have as many of those as possible in place when the tournament starts. Format should be as follows:
A sample entry is as follows: Alice L. Melvin, Pumpkin Scissors Description: A noblewoman who chose to carry on her family's elite military tradition, Alice is the Captain of Section 3, aka Pumpkin Scissors, a little-respected military division devoted to war relief in the wake of a devastating war in a setting equivalent to post-WWI Europe. What Makes Her A Hero: Even though others treat it as a joke, Alice is whole-heartedly committed to the mission of her section and goes to great lengths to try to help common citizens deal with the after-effects of war, including taking down bandits and misbehaving nobles and confronting corruption. She does not flinch from putting her own honor and family reputation (and resources) at stake to meet a goal, attacks problems with an unrelenting fierceness, and inspires many others with her examples. I'll be doing some of these myself, but I'll take offers of write-ups on any of them; those write-ups may be posted in this thread. If write-ups for certain characters are not posted by late next week then I'll be contacting the original nominators via PM to have them do the write-up; expect a "Needs" list early next week. Also, I may be asking for picture links on some of these characters. That "Needs" list will also go up probably the middle of next week. Astro Boy, Astro Boy series
Description The famous robot boy title character of Osamu Tezuka's work of the same name. Has been featured in three series, a 1963, 1980, and 2003 series. Hero Qualifications Being a super robot with 10,000 horsepower who stops bad guys isn't all that makes Astro a hero. He's treated as a second class citizen in his world by humans but is still constantly fighting for the robots and the humans to live in peace with one another. Even when everyone shuns Astro and accuses him of wrongdoing, he'll still fight to protect humans and robots from danger because he knows it's the right thing to do. He fights for everyone in an attempt to bring unity to the world, he realizes that his actions speak for all of robots and despite being super powered and easily capable of crushing either side, he loves both robots and humans and fights to unite the warring sides, not only through fighting, but through talking. *note*, this applies pretty equally to the 1980 and 2003 series, haven't seen the 1963 series but I can't imagine it to be too much different (especially based on what I've read of the manga). |

Nausicaa, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Description: The heroine of Studio Ghibli's first animated feature film released in 1984 under the same name. She is the princess of her homeland, the Valley of the Wind. Hero Qualifications: While a capable fighter, Nausicaa is a peace-loving heroine who believes in a peaceful coexistence between man and nature. She cares strongly for the well-being of her village and the creatures that inhabit the toxic jungles. Her care for humans, animals, and other beings make this apparent. She is willing to put her life on the line in order to come to the aid of her fellow villagers or any creature found in the toxic jungle. |

My two nominations, hope these are alright.
Clare, Claymore Description: A "claymore", a half human warrior who fights against shapeshifting monsters called Yoma in a medieval fantasy setting. Claymores are half Yoma themselves, and must struggle to avoid becoming the very monsters they fight. What Makes Her A Hero: While all claymores kill Yoma, and thus protect humans after a fashion, Clare goes above and beyond what is required of her by duty. She takes in an orphened child, Raki, and cares for him after his village abandons him. Despite the fact that most humans fear or even outright hate her, Clare will suffer grevious wounds to stop them from coming to harm, even if they had been trying to kill her moments earlier. Though she has her own goals and desires, Clare will not hesitate to throw them away and come up with a plan almost certain to lead to her death, if seems the best way to save others. And even when faced with her seemingly inevetiable doom, her chief concern is still for others, and to make sure Raki is taken care of. Pics, number one, two, and three. Tochiro, Gun Frontier Description: A short, bow-legged, and not terribly attractive man, who also happens to be an incredibly skilled samurai. He travels with his best friend and skilled gunfighter Harlock, in a setting that is a bizare version of the Old West. What Makes Him A Hero: Despite often suffering at the hands of bigots and racists, Tochiro doesn't react in kind, and in fact he tends to treat people he meets with respect, until they so often show they don't deserve it. He shows great care for strangers and people that's he's just barely met, and he often finds himself helping out and in some cases risking his life for those people. He shows great courage throughout the series, earning the admiration and respect of those who can look past his appearance and get to know him. Pics, number one, two, and three. I said I'd host it again. ... You forgot to uncheck the option to use the first cell as the category when you sorted your list (Vash is at the top). |

Write-ups? Sure. Just to be incredibly cheap, I'll start with:
Vash the Stampede, Trigun Description: Donut-scarfing sharpshooting outlaw with superhuman abilities, Vash spends his days on Planet Gunsmoke helping those in need and fleeing all manner of villains. He's childlike and puts on a facade of optimism and goodwill despite being tortured by pains of the past. Hero Qualifications: Vash is clearly capable of destroying all of mankind in a matter of days, but not only does he choose to fight for good instead, he refuses to take a single human life. He spouts a mantra of "love and peace" that may seem like a joke initially, but it's a vow of pacifism he would readily die for. His love for humanity even extends to the most corrupt of baddies who he spares and urges to change their ways, even at great cost to his own safety. Faithful to a fault, Vash is a shining example of compassion in a world ruled by the violent and lawless. Ashitaka, Princess Mononoke Description: Prince of the Emishi people, a brave warrior who travels far to the western forests to heal himself of a curse placed on him by a vengeful god. He fights against both sides in a war that does not concern him, though the choice to fight determines the outcome of his soul. Hero Qualifications: Ashitaka is skilled with a sword and bow and has a strong fervor for justice, protection, and responsibility. His true heroism shines, however, in his choice not to seek sides or vengeance in the passionate war between mankind and the forest creatures. He fights instead to build a compromise between the warring sides, and fights bravely despite being under a curse that eats slowly through his body and threatens to transform into a demon and then take his life. More later, maybe, if other people don't cover them, but those are two of my favorites. (I must be a sucker for guys who could knock down an army by blinking but just decide not to blink.) |

Age, Heroic Age
Description: Vessel for the powerful being Bellcross, Age is a boy destined to help humanity in its fight for survival against the more advanced alien races. Qualifications: Although selected by others, Age willingly and earnestly fulfills his destiny. Braving danger and fatigue, Age faces overwhelming enemy forces and loyally protects the princess to whom his services are pledged. This wise and friendly boy from a deserted planet supports the humans with whatever he can offer, be it his strength or advice. A classic hero in a sci-fi setting. Ashram, Record of Lodoss Wars: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight Description: The black knight of Marmo. Ashram served as the greatest vassal of its emperor and inherited the empire and leadership of its forces following the end of the previous war. Qualifications: Ashram is a loyal and courageous knight who served his emperor unswervingly. Following Beld's death, Ashram inherited his will and led the people of Marmo against the forces of Lodoss to procure a livable land for his subjects. This man mastered the demon sword Soul Crusher and assembled a force of elite members on a quest to find powerful relics to aid in the war effort, knowing full well that the mightiest dragons of the land guard the treasures, so as to save lives that might have otherwise been needlessly sacrificed. |

A couple more before I call it a night on my end.
Shu Maritani, Now and Then, Here and There Description: A middle school student who was whisked away to another world while defending the mysterious girl Lala-Ru from soldiers for the military dictatorship of Hellywood. Hero Qualifications: This strong-willed young man was one of the few who maintained a strong will and optimism in a hopeless world dominated by Hellywood. Shu believed that good will come out of all situations and encouraged this to several characters throughout the series who fell victim to Hellywood's influence. There have been some cases where he saved the lives of others and put himself at risk to protect and rescue Lala-Ru. Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso Description: The pig-faced bounty hunting pilot living in post World War I era Italy in the 1992 Studio Ghibli title of the same name. Hero Qualifications: Despite his rough exterior, Porco is a man of honor. He is on respectful terms with air pirates despite their rivalry with one another. This respect is so great that both sides coexist with a minimum amount of bloodshed when in battles and they are on neutral terms while spending time at Hotel Adriano. Porco is also strongly opposed to the Fascist direction that Italy is heading into as the country feels the effects of post-war depression. |

This is a character that I really like, so hopefully this comes out well.
Duck, Princess Tutu Description: A duck who becomes both a girl and a magical ballerina named Princess Tutu through the power of a special amulet, she works to restore ballet student and storybook prince Mytho's shattered heart by finding the scattered pieces of it, in mysterious town setting inspired by both ballet and traditional fairlytales. What Makes Her A Hero: Duck gets started on her quest out of a love for Mytho and a desire to bring happiness to his sad looking eyes, but it is no selfish love that drives her. She shows a great deal of compassion for practically everyone she encounters, and as the series goes on, she displays a level of selflessness and heartfelt courage that is incredibly inspiring and affects many lives for the better. Every single good thing that occurs in the series can be partially or completely atributed to Duck's actions, from the redemption of characters to the healing of many wounded hearts. Duck struggles against horrible adversity at times, and suffers great physical and emotional pain as a result, but her incredible determination and her strong hope at the end proves to be the catalyst that breaks through the powers that seem intent on bringing an entirely tragic end to the story. Pics: As a duck, as a girl, number one, two, and three, and as Tutu. Last edited by Mad_Scientist on Sat Mar 21, 2009 1:17 pm; edited 1 time in total |
