An interesting and frank interview with the bad boy of western animation. He talks a bit about anime, and love him or hate him, he's got an interesting take on animation in general.
Warning! Pop-up. http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/518/518805p1.html?fromint=1 |

I read that a few days ago and am not surprised you brought it up.
Bakshi's work, to me, has always been pretty cool, but it really seems to me he's slipping a little too much into the role of "artistic outlaw", you know? He spends a lot of time in the interview saying "I was trying to push all of these boundaries and reinvent the image of animation in the U.S. and they all just kept holding me back and screwing me over." He's done plenty of cool stuff, but seems really too caught up in whatever message or ideal he's pushing and not caught up enough in animation itself. You know? Kind of he loves the idea of remaking animation more than he loves animation. |

Regardless of his political incorrectness, Bakshi was a genius in his prime. Movies like Hey good lookin',Heavy traffic (i didn't get the ending..
But if there's one thing i have to nitpick, is his handling of the 1967 Spiderman cartoon series. to this very day my friends dismiss it as "Spiderman on PCP" (Citing psychedelic clouds,Hippie music and 3 different versions of Manhattan being lifted off the ground via some souped-up atomic power plant. generic villians, recycled and choppy animation, etc.) Cool World was the nail in the coffin.. (Citing a scene where Mighty Mouse is sniffing a flower, which the FCC IIRC,Compared it to snorting a drug. Awhile ago he was the host on sci-fi channel's Anime marathon special. And there's no doubt that he had paved the way for other artists, writers, directors in the field of Animation. |

I didn't like what he did with Fritz the Cat myself. Same mentality which ruined the movie adaptation of Clockwork Orange. He gets points for trashing Katzenberg's films though.
Edit: That interview reminds me that they need Mighty Mouse on dvd. |

Why do you think John K. wants to be this guy's jailhouse bitch? Plus both are just a couple of old guys who have lost touch with reality. |
