I loved Fushigi Yuugi when I was a kid and I still do, but I'm disappointed by Genbu. I think it was Watase's chance to get really deep and depressing. After all, she was the priestess who failed and got devoured. She can't help herself, though, and make Takiko the inspiring girl that changes everyone's lives for the better. That's just so overplayed. She got over her older man crush in like two seconds, which I totally thought was going to be the thing that screwed her over, the thing she wouldn't be able to get over. But no, no. She's awesome and in love with someone more appropriate who loves her back and she's getting her crew together well and she's winning over the people in the country who hate her in general and she has a positive outlook and blah blah. It's a little annoying. I collect the series and read it anyway, but it's just boring. So blah. I'm sure the reason she fails isn't going to be very moving. In all her little side comments, Watase makes her audience clear, but I think by now she should freely be able to stray from the "happy good-girl that goes through horrible crap but is still inspiring" typical junk that she obviously thinks young girls should be reading and do something deeper.

Is it possible to read Genbu Kaiden without having enjoyed the original? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

I never finished reading the original Fushigi Yugi. The happy ending that the story was leading up to felt contrived, and was obviously invented to please fans who did not have the maturity to accept anything but a happy ending.

Everything in Genbu feels well designed by a mature writer and artist. The visuals are stunning, the emotions are well explored, and the characters are well developed (once you get over the Ranma-esque gender shifting powers of the lead male, anyway). I hate to see it end, and am dreading the tragedy that will accompany that ending, but I know the author will make it powerful and I trust her enough to know that I will not regret the experience.

I want to like Genbu Kaiden more than I do. But it's harder to understand. The original Fushigi Yugi was a lot easier to comprehend what was going on. I get confused reading Genbu Kaiden.

And why is everyone so down on Miaka? She never complained when yet another odd plot twist meant she had to go somewhere else to fetch yet another magic thing. And she forgave Yui when most people would give up on such a bitter girl.

Is this the last volume of Genbu Kaiden? I thought the mangaka was taking a break from the series and is suppose to resume it some time in the future. Confused

I never understood that severe hate Miaka got from the fans either. I thought she was a nice girl, and I've certainly seen worse female leads than her.

So I guess this manga is a little different from the original Fuchigi Yuugi? I just finished the first and enjoyed it, but wasn't sure if progressing onto the further stories would ruin the good taste it left with me or not. I suppose I'll keep reading.

Watase is still currently working on it, so no, this isn't the last volume. It'll just be a while for the next one since she's working on two other series and recently her mom got ill.
