Hello,
I am not new to animenewsnetwork, however I am new as in having just recently signed up for an account. As per the rules, I have searched for other surveys and found that most of them either do not address the majority of my questions or link to missing documents. I am writing a paper on anime fans and how they experience content for my public speaking class at UC Davis. I would very much appreciate any and all help in acquiring reliable data via this survey. The survey is short in comparison to the others I have seen so it shouldn't be too painful. Thank you very much in advance, and hopefully someone else can find the results helpful in the future as well. I know "teh rules" say that lists are not acceptable but does this count? 1) On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a hardcore Otaku, what level would you place yourself at? 2) How long have you been an anime/fan fiction/manga fan? 3) How many manga are you reading on a regular basis per month? 4) How many anime are you watching on a regular basis per month? 5) How many fan fiction stories do you read on a regular basis per month? 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga, anime and fan fiction you view? 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Ex: I spend hours sometimes looking for a new manga to read. I can be the first data sample 1) I would rank myself an 8. 2) I have been involved with anime/manga/fan fiction for 8-9 years 3) I am currently following 14 different manga. 4) I am currently following 4 different anime. 5) I read well over 25 different stories (not necessarily to completion because the story may be in progress) per month. 6) The biggest factor that limits the amount of anime, manga and fan fiction I can experience is time. There are simply not enough hours in the day. 7) I type URL's in directly to the browser to get to the content that I want. 8) I do both downloading and viewing online. The former is for series that I really like. Furthermore, if it is a series that just captures me I will purchase hard copies. 9) I usually find new series by googling, asking friends, looking at other people's favorites and good old fashioned sifting through the tons of content manually. Sometimes the process can be long and arduous. 10) The biggest problem I face is time. By time I mean finding new content is an issue, especially with fan fiction. I also do not like having to scroll around when viewing manga online, I would like to see it all at once without mousing down to read the rest of the page. Furthermore, the new fad of having ads with audio really really annoys me in the middle of Naruto. Thank you very much! |

1) On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a hardcore Otaku, what level would you place yourself at?
Eh, probably about an 8. I'll watch a lot of anime and discuss it quite a bit but I'm not to the point where I'll cosplay or must own figurines. 2) How long have you been an anime/fan fiction/manga fan? About 5-10 years. For the first five, I wouldn't call myself a huge anime fan. I just watched the kids shows that were localized on networks like Fox. About 5 years ago is when I started becoming a hardcore anime fan. 3) How many manga are you reading on a regular basis per month? 0. I don't read manga. I just don't care for it. 4) How many anime are you watching on a regular basis per month? About 6. It tends to alternate when I finish an anime and start a new one. For the most part, I'll watch 3 or 4 long running series (Bleach, Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Shugo Chara) but then there will be 3 or 4 shorter animes that I finish and start anew (most recently, Sengoku Basara, 11eyes, To Aru Majutsu no Index). 5) How many fan fiction stories do you read on a regular basis per month? 0. I don't care for fan fiction. 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga, anime and fan fiction you view? Interesting question. I'd say just normal activities in everyday life. Work, sleeping, engaging with friends. For me, it's mostly work, sports and videogames. 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. Yes. I watch all my anime on the same sites. 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. For the most part, just view it online. I like to download anime openings and some AMVs, but not entire anime episodes themselves. 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? For the most part, I'll start watching a new anime by word of mouth and looking into what's listed on sites like ANN on what's coming out during a certain season. I'll read the previews and watch the animes that pique my interest the most. It's not really that difficult for me but there are times when I'm a little bored and will be looking for a new anime to watch, but just can't decide on what I should watch. 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Ex: I spend hours sometimes looking for a new manga to read. I'd say my biggest problem with anime is it consumes a little too much time in my life and it takes away from my productivity. When I should be doing something else, I'll be watching anime. |

1) 6
2) From about 2000 3) Now-none 4) It depends. Now I follow DB Kai and two shorter ones. 5) It depends if someone recommend me any. 6) I get bored very quickly, so usually 1 episode ora chapter per day is enough for me. 7) I have some sites that I trust. If they haven't it I use google. 8)Usually online. 9) I usually check two polish sites with reviews (www.azunime.net and www.tanuki.pl). They seem small, compared to English ones, but the level of their articles is quite high and I know which reviewers have similar taste to mine. 10) Money, money, money and lack of time |

1) Zero. I dislike groups, and I dislike labeling others with titles such as otaku.
2) Anime fan for 4 years, or so. 3) Nil. Gave up on manga. 4) Hmm. Not sure. I'd say about 20-30 episodes a week lately. 5) Never will read fan fiction. 6) Work and sleep are responsible for limiting my time and not letting me watch more anime. No complaints though. Too much anime would drain my enthusiasm and force me into another MMORPG, and that's a huge waste of time in my view. 7) Back when I made my anime list at ANN I also put the ones I was interested under "Want to see". Nowadays I don't need to find anime, but just pick one from the list. 8) I download and view anime online(I don't watch unofficial streaming). Anything I like would go to my wish list at amazon.uk, if it's available, perfect, if not, well. 9) Read answer #7. 10) Fortunately none whatsoever. The lack of time doesn't matter, since the anime won't run away. |

1) Probably a 6, I have a bigger collection than most of my friends, but a lot of them have seen more anime than me somehow...
2) oooooo, it's 2010 now so....8 years say? Somewhere around there 3) Depends on the school work load, but if we're going by individual volumes, I bet I read somewhere around 15-20 volumes at least, even counting them as re-reads. I can follow up to 10 series at a time. It's gotta be nearer to 40 during summer months though. 4) Hmm, also including re-watches...usually 5-10 episodes per week except the week after a wave of tests where it's usualy double that. I can follow 4-5 series at most at a time. 5) Zero, never read one 6) Time, how well I actually want to do in classes, money, social obligations 7) What, like to buy? TRSI to buy of course, as for going to specific sites though? Yes. 8) Yes, usually for things I'm curious on buying or aren't licensed though. 9) Ask friends, pick a name out of a hat, whatever is on hand that needs to be finished in my backlog, or whatever looks like it might be interesting, always try everyone once! It might be hard to find a new manga series to really stick to me, but I can always find something at least. 10) Finding time to really sit back and enjoy it, take it in in all its glory and not just as a background noise or something. |

6. My tastes tend towards more eclectic and less mainstream anime a lot, but I don't watch a lot of it compared to most people, and I have no interest in conventions, merchendise or (apart from this forum) the whole community aspect.
More than 10 years.
None most months, maybe 1 if something really catches my eye. I don't read alot of manga.
Between 1 and 2 most months, I like to focus my attention on the really good stuff instead of watching everything. When new seasons start I might follow 4 or 5 shows for a few weeks until I figure out what I like.
I haven't read fan fiction in years.
Anime and manga- cost, I only have a small amount of money to spend on it. Fan fiction- no interest in it.
Yep.
I download some shows, but mostly I wait for things to come out on DVD and buy them.
I use anime blogs to see if something interests me. I'll then typically download the first few episodes to test the waters so I can buy it when the option is available.
Most of it just isn't very good. |

Okay, i'll give this a shot.
1)Probably an 8+. Okay, 9. Anime is all over my hard drive/external hard drive/dvd shelves/VHS cases. I do have plenty of other things to watch, but my interest has dwindled over the years due to: a) TV is Xhundred channels of salespitch, marketing, and adgendas(not as much of a mis-type as you think) ; b) i have personally gotten turned off to the overwhelming culture of "celebrity" (newspapers are dying but crapulence like "People" and that ilk will always sell....bleh!); c) fortunately, i can tell reality from fantasy/animation, so that probably keeps me from making double digits. 2)Started getting into it in the mid 90's, kinda lost interest for a little while, and about 6 years ago, re-found my love for the genre. 3)Too many to count. Current titles easily about 15 or so, older titles probably about a dozen. I've finished a few, and start new ones constantly. I don't care for mega-run series, longest run i have of any is at volume 18 (with more to go, gero!) 4)WAY too many! I have a box full of dvds that i have yet to get to (last count 11 series, some full, some single disc) and at least 20-30 on my computer (and accessories). Some nights i may watch an episode of this or that, and do a lot of series, some nights i may try and marathon something, some nights, i just don't feel like it at all. Um, that last one doesn't happen too often. 5)none. wow, that one's easy. 6)Biggest limit? Time. I work over 40 hrs a week, I have other things to do, that have to be taken care of. Most weekends though, is prime time. 7)Nope. I go to boards, various types online, see what's getting mentioned, see if anything sounds interesting. But for manga/dvds, lots of times, i'll just find things that i just stumble across. 8)I will admit to downloading. However, once a series gets licensed & released, I will get the dvds as well (can you say "extras"?). I work with records for a living. I've been a collector longer than i've been an otaku. It's one thing to see something you like, it's totally different to be able to hold it in your hand and say "i have this". There is no such thing as a valuable (cash-wise) download. Plus, i don't mind paying for something i like, because, if i like it, and pay for it (and others do too), perhaps the maker will see that it sells, and produce more. ahemahemareyoulisteningGA/ShoulderacoffinKuroahemahem.... 9)Pretty much look at my answer for #7 for that. 10) Not overly picky, i know the genres i like (usually humor), and i am willing to take a risk on something unknown, if it suits me at the time. Sometimes, the stumble works (Dokura-chan, Nurse Witch Komugi, etc.), sometimes the stumble is a giant steaming pile (To Heart, School Days). As I said above, i work with records (the turntable variety), and unlike the record-store-guy stereotype of being hipster and snotty to anyone who doesn't share my taste-i have always told people who came in "like what you like, don't like what you don't like, and don't let anyone make those decisions for you. |

Wooo, UC Davis! Where a cow is our school mascot. Okay, not really, it's a mustang, but if you ask most people, they think it's a cow.
1) On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a hardcore Otaku, what level would you place yourself at? Hmm, 6. Not die hard, especially not lately. I still attend cons and stuff though. 2) How long have you been an anime/fan fiction/manga fan? I discovered I liked it around 1995, but didn't really start doing much about it until about 2001. So, let's go with 2001. 9 years. 3) How many manga are you reading on a regular basis per month? I don't read per month, since manga is not on a monthly schedule. I am, however, reading 19 series. Assuming manga comes out maybe every other month... you could say I read about 9 manga a month. Oh, except for One Piece, 'cause that's accelerated right now, so that comes out 5/month. Say 13/month then. 4) How many anime are you watching on a regular basis per month? Currently I'm taking a break. Normally, I usually watch maybe 2-3 series at a time. I'm not sure though if you're talking about individual episodes, or series. Individual episodes, I probably watch... maybe 12 a month? It kind of depends how good the series is. If it's a really good series, I can watch the whole series (26 eps) in a week. 5) How many fan fiction stories do you read on a regular basis per month? Zero, unless you count Topless Robot's horrible Fan Fiction Friday, but I can only take so much pain. 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga, anime and fan fiction you view? Time, and an inability to stay focused for too long. 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. Yes, but just one site, and just for anime. I do not read scanlations. 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. I do both. I've started using legal streams occasionally. My downloading though has been drastically reduced due to lack of interesting anime. 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? ANN's seasonal previews. It is fairly difficult to find a new series nowadays, as much anime has become stale. 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Ex: I spend hours sometimes looking for a new manga to read. Really, just maintaining finding something that lines up with my tastes. I've become rather bored and jaded with much of current anime. Manga still retains a lot of the fun though, so I've been switching my purchasing to that. |

1) On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a hardcore Otaku, what level would you place yourself at?
9 I guess, but I'd like to know the difference between each number. 2) How long have you been an anime/fan fiction/manga fan? Mid 90's, with My Neighbor Totoro and Sailor Moon and what have you. 3) How many manga are you reading on a regular basis per month? 3-4 give or take, depending on what I buy during the month. 4) How many anime are you watching on a regular basis per month? 3-4, depending on how much of the current season I like/what series I'm rewatching. 5) How many fan fiction stories do you read on a regular basis per month? None. 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga and anime you view? Money and internet connection. I'd like to start streaming more shows, but my connection is pretty crappy so it's a pain to mess with. 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. Specific site. 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. Download. 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? The great big chart released before every season. Not hard at all. 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Ex: I spend hours sometimes looking for a new manga to read. 97% of fan fiction sucks, causing people to not bother with the format at all. Not including doujinshi and whatnot, but as in a short story based off the sexual adventures of Shinji Ikari and Haruhi Suzumiya. And if that exists, I will shed a tear. |

1) On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a hardcore Otaku, what level would you place yourself at?
I'd say about a 6 or 6.5, I used to be more intense when I was younger 2) How long have you been an anime/fan fiction/manga fan? Since about 1998 3) How many manga are you reading on a regular basis per month? About 3, I'll read manga on my way to/from work and I can usually get through a volume in just over a week. 4) How many anime are you watching on a regular basis per month? I'm in the middle of watching 5 series right now, I usually watch and episode or 2 of each every week. I haven't finished any series in awhile. 5) How many fan fiction stories do you read on a regular basis per month? 0 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga, anime and fan fiction you view? My free time 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. Pretty much just this one or I take suggestions from some of the podcasts I listen to 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. Both depending on the series (I love all the streaming, if only they could do this with every series) 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? I read reviews, read forums, see what is up on the legal streaming sites, right now it's not very hard to find new stuff as I have a backlog of series I currently want to check out 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Ex: I spend hours sometimes looking for a new manga to read. I hate the wait between manga volume releases, I now only buy series that are either entirely released already or have the majority released |

1) On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a hardcore Otaku, what level would you place yourself at?
No idea. I suppose a 5, which means I am a slight/moderate 'Otaku' if you wish to use that term. 2) How long have you been an anime/fan fiction/manga fan? Since 2006, I am a relative new-bee when compared to others on this site but I am still young and have many years to catch up. 3) How many manga are you reading on a regular basis per month? I regularly read five, but also keep checks on others to see where they are going with the story. 4) How many anime are you watching on a regular basis per month? Depends on how busy I am. I currently have about 15 series on the go, but 14 of these are currently airing. I think on average it straddles the 12 mark. 5) How many fan fiction stories do you read on a regular basis per month? I do not read fan-fics. 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga, anime and fan fiction you view? Reality. 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. I have my preferred websites but I do not tend to use google. 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. I do both. I have downloaded some shows such as Higurashi and Baccano. They do not sell these series in the UK...yet and I view these shows when I am away from the internet, such as when I travel home. Then I usually stream currently airing series but also series I wish to watch before considering whether to purchase it or not. Ghost Hunt was the last series I did this with. 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? I tend to research an anime I intend on viewing first so I know what to expect, I am drawn into horror and sci-fi series mostly so my standards tend to be pretty uniform. However with other genres I sometimes find them hard to get into, espically if it offers up something like too much fanservice. 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Ex: I spend hours sometimes looking for a new manga to read. Nothing to report. |

Very seldom 1 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga, anime and fan fiction you view? Time, i dont like to focus on just 1 hobby during my free time. 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. Specific sites 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. I do both, Stream and download anime, mostly read manga online. 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? Blogs online as well as i try to keep track what is coming out each season. 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Waiting for boxsets of really good TV shows to come out, so i can save some money. Waiting for new episodes to be aired and waiting for the next volume of specific manga to be released. |

1) On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being a hardcore Otaku, what level would you place yourself at?
Probably an 8. 2) How long have you been an anime/fan fiction/manga fan? Well, I've been watching anime since I was 6 or 7, so 14 or 15 years. I've been collecting for just over 4 years though, since I bought my first issue of Shonen Jump in January of 2006. 3) How many manga are you reading on a regular basis per month? If you mean volumes, it depends on how many of series that I'm collecting are released, or if I pick up a new series. I'd say an average would be 10, but in the last couple of months it's been more than that. 4) How many anime are you watching on a regular basis per month? I haven't been watching many anime recently, but it's one or two per month at the most. 5) How many fan fiction stories do you read on a regular basis per month? Zero. 6) What would you say is the biggest factor that limits the amount of manga, anime and fan fiction you view? Money would be the biggest factor, the second would be release dates. 7) Do you go to Google or a specific site to find anime/manga/fan fiction? Do not list the sites as I believe that is against the rules. Anime News Network is the only site I use, for videos, reviews and the like. I put a lot of faith in Carlo. 8) Do you download anime/manga/fan fiction or do you view it online? Once again, do not list any resources please. I don't download anything, I really dislike reading manga on my computer. 9) How do you find a new series to follow? How hard is it for you to find a new series to follow? Previews in Shonen Jump, reviews here on ANN, as well as forum discussions. I have a list of titles that I want to check out, so I generally just go off of that, or add to it when I find something new. 10) What are the biggest problems with anime, manga and fan fiction that you currently face? Release dates. It's terrible waiting months for the next volume of a series that leaves off on a cliffhanger all the time. |

I would like to thank all of you for participating in the survey. I have been able to get an fairly sized sample (approximately 30) from this site and others. I cannot express how much I appreciate your taking the time to answer the survey and I will post a summary of the results later so they can be shared with anyone else that wants this kind of information in the future.
Once again, thank you so very much! |
