I was thinking of buying this series, can anyone tell me what they thought of this anime, whether it was always serious, sometimes serious, depressing, was it mostly action or ? Thanks !

Feel free to watch the series legally streaming online as well. I watched about 4 episodes on YouTube but could not get into it. Strange for me because Madhouse is one of my favorite studios, and I usually like slow and dark series.

I would suggest watching it online first. I'm obviously a huge fangirl, but I'll be the first to admit that it's not a show for everyone. It is very dark and serious and slow--it's also brimming with eye candy. The character designs and backgrounds are gorgeous, and the fight scenes are ingeniously choreographed. I am near the end of my first rewatch and I've been pulling it apart and symbolically/thematically there is a shitload of stuff going on. If you like shows that make you think, or that simply look so beautiful they make you ache, this might be the one for you.

I mostly agree with rainbowcourage. It's dark and slow, though structurally it's essentially a shonen show (uber strong hero wanders around, having spectacular fights. The visuals are simple but extremely stylish. I bought the first half and was impressed by the production, not so much by the slow and repetitive plot, so never bothered to buy the second half.
