I dunno why the hell it had to be dragged out 20 years to get to the same effing pairing a few volumes earlier. I appreciate character development, but I didn't need to see Ann as an adult to get how much things had changed since she was a child, when the chapters which covered her teen years did the trick just fine. Still, at least it feels more satisfying than the Emma ending, which just comes off anti-climactic. And yes, I'm aware there's two more volumes of SC, but they're side-stories, so....

I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this topic when I only just finished volume 7. Oops! Thanks for not including any obvious spoilers.

I love Sand Chronicles, and am not upset that the author chose a time-skip to Ann's late 20's. Firstly, it's a nice change of pace from other stories in which the characters are stuck in a time loop or the tale ends at graduation. Secondly, it allows the author to convey how a childhood trauma can negatively influence a person's life well into their adult years (especially if, like Ann, they have not received any proffesional help).

Ann seemed to be in a numbed-out state in her twenties, as she was portrayed in vol 7, at least. I was not quite impressed by the "romance" plot of the volume, but it basically served as a wake-up call to Ann, and in that, it succeeded.

I hope it all doesn't get screwed up in the next volume! Razz

I read it I loved the ending, they both were more grown up by then, and experienced a few break ups before. I feel like Ann had grown and more suitable to be with him now. Then she was in the past. I know it because after reading this put my own life in perspective too as well. I'm 27 years old and after reading this manga made me think back to when I was in high school and how my young love wouldn't have worked at the young age. I liked the fact that the story went further then high school. It's rare to find a manga shojo like this one where they find their love later in life then in high school. It's more realistic and not rushed like in most manga I read now a days. Or the fact they get together in high school and it ends to a forever loop. I loved the ending to this far better then most of shojo I read.

Okay, I just checked out volume 8 and I have to say, really, Ashihara? Did you really have to reinforce the message that a gal's lfe isn't much worth living unless she's married by 30? That "Office Girls" have no ambition besides marrying a wealthy man? And if they do, they must be deeply scarred, bitter individuals? Really?

And worst of all, did your protagonist really have to end up with her first love? I mean, the "women feel pressure to get married" part is depressing, but it's just reflecting a difficult reality that many women do feel (especially in Japan), but how many people marry their teenaged puppy loves in real life? I've heard stories of people dating, breaking up for a few years, getting back together, and getting married in real life, but all the points of their relationship happened when both parties were adults.

There were some good points in this volume, namely Ann getting lost (literally and figuratively) and finally coming to terms with her mother's suicide. That part is emotional and so well done it nearly made me cry (I have a soft spot for parental abandonment stories). Ann's grandmother was a very strong point of support for her, and Ann herself continues to live in a state of ennui after the incident, which is very realistic.

Fuji and Shika's stories were interesting, but felt incomlete. I figure that's what the next two volumes will be about...

But after all that maturing and growth and coming to terms with her past, Ann ends up spoiler[marrying Diego]. It's the insistence of the fairy tale ending after the realistic raw emotion that detracts from the story. If Ann had to end up with someone, I would have rather she found a new guy, understanding and kind, than just go back to an old "comfortable" relationship. Apparently, everyone Ann tried to date after high school were complete jerks, so what could she do?!

So I agree with you, GATSU. What was the purpose of skipping ahead to her mid-twenties if she was only going to end up with a high school sweetheart, anyway?

THIS. Really, I felt the exact same way. I sold the series off after volume 8. I was so dissapointed and disgusted. =/

I've been disappointed since they broke up the first time. I think it would've worked better if it was like Mars, where they over-come her issues together. Gawd, I hope Jason covers that in a future manga column.
