It is certainly true that Aimee's issues hit me in a non-comical way this episode. More specifically, when she laid down on the floor and started screaming. It seemed less like a humorous exaggeration of a fangirl and more like someone with Obsessive compulsive tendencies not being able to handle a lot of stimulation and losing control in public. There are a lot of things that could cause that, and I don't want to pretend to be an expert.
It kind of reminded me of when Kirio's background suddenly got real. This show dances a line between sweet and disturbing, grotesque and absurd, and realistic and satirical all the time, but sometimes the scales smash down on one side or another. That said, I liked the episode and love the show. |

Yeah, it was 100% abnormal but your right the shows given enough confidence to think that it'll probably address it more directly (or that the manga will, if the cour does not permit...)
Rest of the episode was solid fun. I have to say, texting is pretty common in anime now but its more fun in Kirio. I think its the occasional wild absurdity means something that often slightly deflating still has some tension of the unexpected in it. |

Normally, in a story like this, after revealing some personal drama little by little the episodes work into a way for the character to overcome this drama, pain, trauma, complex, ending in a "happy ending". Doesn't seem to be the case here? The mood is getting worse and worse. With the exception of Manda all other characters feels like they're going deeper and deeper into the hole with no hope of coming out. The ending should be "intense". |

I've often noticed that anime tend to reach their low points around episode 10 or 11, which is why they are often my least favorite episodes. They tend to be where the climax of the overall season storyline ocurr, and then episode 12 bats cleanup and does any last minute saves or else picks up the pieces.
I think what we may be seeing is the build-up to that point. It might be dark because things are just going to keep getting darker for a bit. But I've been wrong before. What's amazing to me is that a show with this kind of dark has also gotten more genuine belly laughs out of me than any other show this season. |

Few observations here:
So when I saw Aimi looking all brightly technicolored, and the three (Mean? Passive aggressive? "Normal?") girls were that dull monochrome, it reminded me of Kirio saying that Aimi and Nami were radiant. Maybe it was meant to remind me of that? It's also true that Aimi's goofy, juvenile-but-lively poop humor seems very reminiscent of Kirio's before his friend died. For anyone still wondering if maybe Nami's not in love with Aimi, today she said that she can't tell anyone who she's in love with. Which certainly seems to indicate that she's not in love with Kirio since she's been telling that to Aimi every day. I felt bad for poor Shmomosi. |

The flashback showcase of Aimi is just a really great character sketch of being a young oddball who doesn't just- as is common- not fit in, but who doesn't even understand what fitting in would mean. At the same time, it slips in "are all your friends dead?" which is by far the joke of the week. The shows gift at blending tones is really great.

I took a lot of it as evidence to an earlier comment that Aimi is neurodivergent. In addition to her obsessive interests, she has trouble understanding social cues and interacting with her peers, sometimes end up nonverbal from getting overwhelmed, has a habit of repeating random facts, and I think that she may have been by when playing with her hoodie string when the teacher was talking to her. And Nami is totally crushing on Aimi, it was why she said her love doesn't quite look the same as the guy''s, so she is afraid of being shunned for not being straight. |

This series is such a gem. Rarely have we seem "cringe" this beautiful and moving. In episode 7 Aimi really had an "autistic short-circuit", this episode 9 confirms she is (without really telling explicitly). To watch a series like this, with so many scenes that have you baffled unsure how to even feel because it's at the same time funny and very sad... 
I would assume that is just a "flashback thing", but you may be right and that was a deliberate thematic choice.
Rather than showing Aimi's dificulties, it shows me how little effort "normal" people made to understand each other. In that setting everyone was just "following the manual", with teachers acting by the book and the students just following orders. The painful part of those scenes walking home was how nono of those three girls opened their mouths a single time. |

@Panino Manino, Yah, I guess it's pretty clear what dark climax events have been leading up to.
Kirio, don't jump! Or put down that toaster! Or, y'know...something. As to whether Nami will ever reveal her true feelings, or whether Aimee is really in love with Kirio or just wants to save him and how that might factor into things, or how this tangled situation will resolve itself, that's harder to predict. 
BTW, I thought that park bench situation was pretty fresh. |

For how serious it was getting towards the end, I did find it very funny when the girls accidentally got themselves into the middle of a sting.

Our favourite stalker was my favourite comedy of the episode, but it remains amazing how the show can be comedy of the season and yet also one of the low key better dramas as well.

On a similar note, I've also enjoyed watching the creepy, occult obsessed otaku become the most mature, socially adept character in the anime. Of course, the bar is pretty low, but he's the one who's identified Kirio's survivor's guilt, and I'm hoping all of the various characters with their various obsessions will form a misfit rescue squad and that it will maintain the show's genius for combining tragedy and comedy.
It's been quite a ride. |
