I think The Viz thread showed 325 minutes. So 13 episodes if i'm not mistaken.

My only problem is 74 episodes @ 13 episodes a disc = at least 5 or more boxsets.

I want this show badly but at the price, episode count, and bosext count I'll pass until it hits a much better price.

Yeah I saw that but I wasn't going to calculate that in my head. (You'll have to forgive me, I hate math. lol)

Anyways, looks like I will DEFINITELY be waiting to buy this in that case.

I think this type of initial release is to be expected. It seems like theirs a growing trend to release anime in a odd episode count "season" sets instead of volumes. I'm sure at some point down they line they'll compact it into 2 or 3 box sets for 40-60 bucks. The problem with doing dvd releases with Monster is that it has such an odd number of episodes. I can't think of any other series that has 74 episodes. It's going to be a weird number of episodes per set regardless of how they do it. But as long as they get it to the fans for a some what reasonable price theirs nothing to worry about.

Hikaru no Go has just about the same number of episodes.

13 episodes per box implies about six boxes, or $360 retail. I had hoped that Viz learned from its experience with Hikaru that selling series of this length at $4-5 per episode won't fly in today's anime market. Guess not. As much as I value Monster, I'm not willing to pay more than $2-3 per episode for most series including this one. I'll wait for the next generation of boxsets.

Edit: Well, I guess the markup is fairly substantial since Amazon has it listed for pre-order at $42, or just over $3 per episode. Makes a great Xmas gift!

I think it's safe to say that it will be available for 30 on Amazon at some point. Hopefully from RS, but at least from someone I trust.

It's currently being offered on Amazon for 32.99. Not a bad price if you ask me, especially for a series that's been a long time coming (and may or may not see a re-release).

The link said it was 325 minutes. That means it's thirteen episodes. As much I think the nearly $60 price is okay for this many episodes, I think it's more practical to have at least 24 episodes for that price.

Since they don't seem to have learned, I fear that if the high-priced sets don't sell, they'll drop it altogether like they did HnG. I get the feeling Viz is just itching for an excuse to drop Monster too.

I can't understand Viz's marketing "strategy" about Monster at all. They've kept it under wraps like a state secret (anybody have a cast list that wasn't diligently gleaned from VA's blogs?), even at cons where they could shill it for free. I wouldn't be surprised if they only announced the Sci-Fi airing because Syfy accidentally leaked it in their schedule. Now they're putting out expensive, shelfspace-eating boxsets (3 episodes per disk? C'mon...), and needlessly rating it 18+ which will reduce its sales even more.

It's like someone held a gun to their head to make them license it and now they're trying to retaliate by making sure it fails.

I was amused that Amazon dropped its price for the set from $42 to $33 in a week or less. I still don't understand why, other than greed, they're only packaging three episodes per disc and adhering to a "cours" formula (13 episodes) that seems irrelevant to DVD release.

Compared to Sentai's upcoming release of Ghost Hound, also in 13-episode batches, the price for Monster now looks pretty competitive. RightStuf has Ghost Hound at $45; Amazon is about ten dollars more. Considering that Ghost Hound is subbed-only, I'm wondering where the extra production costs might lay to justify the higher price. Maybe I.G charged a lot more for the rights? Ghost Hound is more recent and by a famous director, Shirow Masamune of GitS fame.

Still If Viz would' just move to a 15-16 episode per box format for Monster, they could cut an entire box out of the set and help make this series more affordable in these recessionary times.
