I just got my copy of Gravi vol. 10, and is it me or does the artwork look different? i compared it to the first coupla vols and you can really see it in Shuichi and Yuki's faces. They look like differen people. The jaws are too pointed now an their profiles ar different. not sure if I like teh changes.

I think it's because Maki Murakami is more used to drawing the characters now, and her overall style is changing as her talent is growing. I prefer the new art over the old art in Gravitation, it's more proportioned, and, well, cute.

it happens alot with series, especially if the artist is uncertain which direction the characters will take, also the more the characters are drawn the easier it is to draw them with fewer errors, the lastest drawing seem much cleaner and more defined than the first volume.

Murakami-sensei's style definitely grew more cute throughout the manga (by the end of volume 12, Shuuichi looks like he's lost a couple years in age when he really should have gained a couple
Shuuichi seems to be turning more and more into a shoujo manga heroine with each new incarnation |

Murakami-sensei ended the Gravitation manga in 2002, but she has recently started up again (it was surprising to me as a long-time anime fan since series continuation rumors are almost never true, but in this case it was!) Instead of being printed in a paper magazine this time, it's coming out in a webcomic anthology (found here: http://www.gentosha-comics.net/genzo/index.html She doesn't do it every month, but so far Gravitation has been in the December, February, March, and April issues....the March cover has a cute pic of Shuu and Yuki, btw, which can be seen by scrolling down a bit on the back issues page: http://www.gentosha-comics.net/genzo/backnumber/index.html )
So anyway, I've been trying to download it, and on Windows XP I got pretty far into the process (Windows ME, for some reason, pretty much rejected the whole process and gave me error messages after the initial download), but once I press a button that's supposed to take me to a page to enter my credit card information, I get an Internet Explorer error message (I can only tell it's an IE error because that part's written in English while all the rest of the message is garbled characters that were originally Japanese). I haven't yet been able to find any English speakers who've successfully downloaded anything beyond the December sample chapter, so I don't even know if it's possible to get this to work on a non-Japanse system...sigh. I need more Gravi, dammit! I can only hope that a tankoubon comes out at some point (but I don't know if they usually do that for webcomics). |
