Well, the Digimon manhwa has been long since discontinued, but as a big Digimon fan I never picked it up. Why? Something bothers me when you TRANSLATE a book, and yet still use dub terms. It's not "translating" it's using the dub terms and names. And with that, I never picked it up when they first were put out for sale by Tokyopop...
Now, my question for people who own/have read it, is how is the rest of the series? Does everything else seem to be in order, or did they actually follow the characterizing of the dub to change the characters wording (for example, making Daisuke/Davis a complete idiot and whiner, when he wasn't AS bad in the original Japanese, or make Koushirou/Izzy use TONS of computer terms) since that wouldn't just be changing the names, but the entire script's translation! My question is similar with the Pokemon manga, which is currently for sale. Although it's done by Viz, they still seem to use the dub "translations" than what the actual paper says. Yet somehow, in Pokemon it doesn't bother me as much... *shrug* But once again for this series, how is the rest of the translation? I thought I read that all the non tv show characters actually KEEP some of their Japanese names, with the main characters and the Pokemon themselves to be the only ones with the dub names. Pokemon itself as a dub, doesn't seem to have changed the script AS much as say Digimon has when it comes to a dub (given the exceptions of editing...). So, for readers of this series (whether it be Adventure, Diamon and Pearl, etc) how is the rest of the translation? I'm just very curious since I've now been looking into picking them up, but as much as I'm not a picky person with say, the quality of a sub translations (not big into literal vs non-literal arguing), it bothers me in manga. |

The Pokemon manga is actually pretty decent. They go by the English games when it comes to Pokemon names, attack names, named characters, and items, but everything else Japanese is generally kept intact (except for honorifics, but Viz rarely uses them anyway).
Viz censored a questionable scene that involved Pokeballs and a ten year-old girl's boobs, but I think that was for the better. A lot of parents would've been upset over that scene, and the manga would probably have ended up banned in a lot of libraries. 
Viz changed the English chapter titles to silly puns to please the kiddies, but they didn't change any of the characters' personalities like Tokyopop did to Digimon. Tokyopop is just an awful, awful publisher that has little to no regard for the original Japanese/Korean edition. I'm still horrified over their Battle Royal translation, where they rewrote the entire script from scratch. |

So Tokyopop DID in fact change the personalities on Digimon? I've seen that the volumes have dropped ALOT in price (used to see certain ones go for over $50 online at one point!) but I just... can't get passed the fact over the translation just being like that... I used to read strictly Tokyopop (back when it was in its prime and had tons of big titles out... although translating Sumomo in Chobit's name to "Plum" REALLY bugged me), and never did see too many issues with obvious translation changes in the series I read. Maybe it's just their treatment with kiddie series?
As for Pokemon, that's good to know. I figured it was done well in that sense, and I did hear about the Pokeball scene, and being the one little part, I don't mind. Changing the titles? Ehh... it doesn't bother me as much either. |

I don't mind VIZ changing a few things around, especially the Pokémon names. Had it never made it to these shores before, I could see keeping the originals, but it did. The series is meant to attract young audiences and how many people higher on the age totem pole actually refer to them all by their Japanese names? I really have to background on the Digimon stuff, though. Doesn't sound too great, but then again, TP was publishing that series years ago. Doesn't sound so great, though I could see leaving in the dub names. |

I read the Pokemon manga as a child, at a time when I really didn't realize that manga was anything different from the comics I was used to reading. However, I'm sure if I picked up a copy today, I'd be kicking and screaming at the changes.
I was just making a comment in another thread on a similar topic. If, for example, the new Super Dimension Fortress Macross: The First manga is released, I wouldn't care if they used the Robotech names. For instance, if the main character is 'Rick Hunter' instead of 'Hikaru Ichijyo' I wouldn't complain. However, name changes are usually a bother to me. Does anyone know why, for example, Dark Horse used 'Blessed Bell' instead of 'Holy Bell' in the Ah, My Goddess manga? That seems the oddest to me. |
