OreImo must have sold quite well to beat out Strike Witches S2
Sigh. |

Well, to be fair, I just want to see both of them walking out of that list very quietly. We have two worthy titles in line... Shiki and LOL Heroes.
Sigh. I didn't think Yosuga no Sora would make it to a list until the last BD. I suppose that, despite the stand alone releases, fans are still going to collect the whole set. I don't think I should be asking this, but Yosuga no Sora got a 18+ rating in Japan, didn't it? It's also 6.9k yen at amazon. I guess it's doing a lot better than I first thought when I saw the list. |

I somehow doubt Shiki will ever rank on one of these lists.
Despite it being one of if not the top show of 2010, it doesn't have hardly any moe elements and it actually tries to weave a fascinating story. Also, it was made by Studio Daume which is like, cursed or something. They pump out nothing but high quality stuff (watch the first season of Minami-ke and then compare it to the Asread-made second and third seasons), and yet their stuff doesn't sell. Shiki was the first large scale project they undertook since that first season of Minami-ke. |

I see. They do use a different style in many series, yeah (their work on Petite Cossette reminds of a dark Shaft). Some very good titles in their directory, and a lot of other animating works.
Very experienced and unique company. It's a shame they'll take a financial hit after making an outstanding series. I think they should have made Sunako older and sexy, or moe. That would negatively affect my experience, but it would make the show more popular (besides all the criticism the current Sunako receives as she is). In other words, the lack of attractive female characters. Wonder just how popular it was on the female audience side. Last edited by egoist on Thu Dec 30, 2010 5:10 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I don't see how Shiki or LOL are anymore worthy of being on the top seller list than any other home video.
They didn't sell enough to make it into the top 20 but where is it in the article that not making it in the top 20 is a finical failure? With the obession people have over sales in Japan it is a wonder why folks in America don't try to get similar(free and sans legal action) information about our market trends. |

Typically if a series does not rank in the top 30 of BD/DVD then it's a financial failure.
However, to see how poorly Shiki has sold in comparison to other shows in the same season, check this post |

Because my opinion is chicken and bacon supreme.
Selling less than 1000 discs is a financial failure for something like Shiki.
I'm talking about it, not obsessing over it. I don't live in America, but am very interested in the UK market. It's just that there's a huge lack of information over here. The market here is quite cozy though. They're smart enough to do things without me getting involved as long as I support it financially. |

Budget, etc. To be fair, I don't think what Shiki made so far in discs sales would even make up for what they spent on the openings/endings. High quality music, but if the series does bad, so does its songs, or at the very least it's highly impaired. |

Good to know. I will keep that arbitrary line in the sand in mind for future reference.
The banter back and forth over what deserves to have made it into the top ranks this week and previous weeks looked like obsessing to me. |

Well, they're both better. What can I do? I'm just stating the truth.
![]() But, at the same time, I'm also aware that if said series didn't exist, probabilities are that the best ones would still sell the same. Say, had they not created another season of SW, Japanese fans would likely just spend that money on sex dolls I mean body pillows of said franchise. |

Regular edition of Disappearance didn't rank.
That's why you don't see it on the list. |

It probably sold around the mid-high 17,000s. The DVDs re definitely in the high 3,000s-low 4,000s range. So around 20,000-22,000 copies sold in total. We'll know the exact numbers on Saturday, but yeah, it sold very well, as expected.
Shiki is a notaminA show, so it relies more on ratings for revenue than a late night anime, which relies more on DVD/BD sales. You'll never see Shiki sale more than a couple hundred DVDs. As for LOLH, it failed, unfortunately. The ratings were awful, even by late night anime standards, and the DVD/BD sales are terrible as well. It just didn't have enough initial hype and the slow pacing and complex plot was a turn off.
Well, sex sales. It BDs look to have sold around the 5,000-6000 range, with the DVDs probably being somewhere in the low-high 1,000s. To be honest, that's more than I thought it would sale as well. |
