Definitely try out Cowboy Bebop. It is one of my favorite anime and pretty much opened my eyes to how many great anime there are out there. For a great anime movie check out Princess Mononoke, It was the first anime movie that I ever saw and it literally blew my mind. I garentee that you will be satisfied with both these titles.

If you like sci fi and computers you might get into Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It deals with cyborgs and cybercrime. Along similar thoughts, the newer Appleseed movie definitely classifies as sci fi.

Cowboy Bebop. It's got almost everything you metioned: space, and a little bit of sci-fi. I've yet to meet someone who didn't enjoy this series.
As far as advice on how to pick new series; my advice is to use the encyclopedia to get an idea of what it's about; then just try it out. Rent the first DVD, watch it on TV, borrow it from a friend, or whatever; but try it out, see if you like it and then decide if it's something you want to spend time and money on. Another piece of advice is to give all different series a chance, you never know when you can stumble upon a series you really enjoy. |

You can also look at what is listed in the 10 Favorite and 5 Least Favorite thread to get a good idea of what people are recommending. Any title which appears repeatedly in that thread is probably worth checking out. Or you can just look at what Netflix offers for anime, look those titles up in the Encyclopedia, and see how people are rating them.
As for specific recommendations, Cowboy Bebop has already been mentioned by a couple of people, but I'll add in my vote for it, too. If you you've seen series like Escaflowne and FMP, then you really should check out Neon Genesis Evangelion at some point. Martian Successor Nadesico might also be worth a look if you want some mecha (giant robot) action that's a bit lighter-hearted, and it sounds like you'd probably like Witch Hunter Robin or Bubblegum Crisis 2040 (the latter is a cyberpunk action series, despite the name). I also agree that you should branch out and sample from other genres. You'd be surprised what you might find to your taste if you give other types of titles a chance. I never thought I would have liked Princess Tutu, for instance, since I normally hate magical girl titles, but I tried it on a recommendation and have found it to be a wonderfully enchanting series so far. And just a friendly piece of advice: do try to clean up the grammar for future posts. Long posts are fine, and we don't expect perfection on grammar, but we do try to maintain high standards. |

ROD TV and ROD OVA have good sci-fi action in them (you can't go wrong with pretty girls capping people with paper weapons), and Last Exile is a great visual treat, like the Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Race, only with airships, and a better storyline/characters. If you liked Noir, there are a few similar series out there, like Gunslinger Girl and Madlax. Outlaw Star is another great space series. If you go to anidb.info and look up series you like, you can find similar series by checking the genres like Sci-Fi/Action/etc.

I don't know if R.O.D. is exactly Sci-fi, but you should check it out anyway. It's one of those series that had me from the begining. Wolf's Rain is Sci-fi with a bit of a fantasy twist, so you might want to check that out. I also think Gundam SEED is also a good title. It's slightly more kiddie, some think, but I really liked it. There's a lot of conflicts going on between characters in the story, and the animation quality is all good. At ten volumes, I was hoping they'd release a thinpak sometime. If you can't find it at store such as Best Buy, try some online stores listed here. And don't worry about those long posts...just try to post more coherently. You'll get better at it.

It depends pn what type of animes you like. If you like violence, try watching Samurai X, Noir, Madlax, Gunslinger Girl, Full Metal Alchemist, and Ghost in the Shell. If you like good story line animes, try Fushigi Yuugi, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Spirrited Away, .Hack//Sign, and Samurai X. Anyway almost all animes have good storylines so it doesn't really matter which ones you see. How I determine what animes to see is that I look on forums that talks about an anime. If many people post that it is a good anime, it's a must watch for anime fans, or anything like that then I write down the anime names, find them on the encyclopedia and read the summary to see if I'm interested in that anime or not. Thanks to this I got pretty interested into Evangelion, School Rumble, and Kimi-ga-Nozomu Eien.

From this, I'd also echo the recommendations above, and throw my recommendation in for Cowboy Bebop. An absolute must see in my opinion if you haven't seen it yet. |

Usually when I find new anime I usually note titles that look interesting at the stores and then come online when I get home to try to find some info and reviews on them. Just need to be careful how far you search as sometimes you bump into sites with major spoilers.
As far as suggestions I'd have to agree with the rest and say go with Cowboy Bebop, and also I agree with the recommendation for Last Exile. |
