We Americans need to get over this notion that anything that doesn't involve a stick and a ball isn't good.
Anyway, Yugo definitely is a must-see for anyone who enjoys serious drama-type things, and this isn't "emo" drama. This is "opposite of comedy" drama. And it's kick-ass, too. Is it just me or does the cover of Princess Tutu make it look like porn? |

This was meant to be February, right? Btw, I haven't seen it but judging by the picture Legend of the Blue Wolves is a yaoi, isn't it? The name "Scott" is male (I'm Scott). Why did you give me a yaoi? Oh well, it's free, I guess I shouldn't be complaining (but I don't know what the heck I'm going to do with it). Is there any way I can get something different? Good reviews as always though, I'm glad DDSH is still "Shelf Worthy" even though the review of the second volume isn't quite as favorable. |

I don't think that's the problem, the problem is the pig skin as Football is the dominant sport in the US despite Baseballs claim as "america's pasttime" which only holds due to Baseballs history in America. Competition is the other part of the problem, many people choose a single sport and devote themselves to that, ignoring or even hating other sports as though it's some sort of great popularity contest to see which sport has more fans. I too love the olympics and the winter olympics more so than the summer olympics. Of course since winter is so prevalent here that's no surprise. There is definiteley some truth to the statement that many sports require an understanding of the rules and gameplay and strategies to truly appreciate them. I think that's why games like Football and Baseball and Hockey are so popular, because the premise is simple and the strategies are obvious where as other sports like many of the olympic sports require a much greater understanding of the strategies and small details that can make or break an athletes performance. Racing is the same way, from an outsiders perspective it's just cars going round and round on a track but there is just so much more too it than that and when you really start to study the sport you begin to realize it's far more complex than the popular sports that dominate the airwaves. In a sense, it's similar to anime in the respect that many people judge anime before they truly understand the depth of anime, you just have to understand it to appreciate it. On a less OT note, I really need to check into Yugo one of these days, so much praise and I've yet to watch a single episode. |

" Well you see, if you are talking about viewers choosing a sport to like and devoting themselves to that, then it is a matter of preferance. Like some people just like action anime, but hate shoujo. But if you are talking how athletes only devote themselves to one sport, well then that is because they have too. I am an athelete myself, and in order to be good at sometime to have to concentrate fully on that one thing if you want to be the best at it. Like a basketball player would be practicing all year around, constantly improving his/her skills. Of course, as a spectator, I would say that you should just atleast try to enjoy each sport atleast once. I bought Yugo vol. 1 That last episode was very good. I wonder, is the second volume gonna get MUCH better, or is that episode 3 like it's limit? |

Because I said to put in the email which titles you didn't want. You didn't put down anything, so I stuck you with Legend of the Blue Wolves. Just because your name is Scott doesn't automatically mean you don't like yaoi; you should've told me you didn't want yaoi. We can talk later though.
The last contest didn't have a grand prize, 1st, 2nd, etc. THey were all 1st prizes up for grabs, so yeah, the hot dog and the rotting meat *did* win. |

Sorry Hardrunner, probably didn't word it the best but I was working and writing my post at the same time. What I meant is competition amongst fans, not so much people just preferring one sport over the other but the type of fans who find it necessary to turn fandom and sport preference itself into a competition. Go to most sport forums and you'll know what I'm talking about. This of course doesn't apply to all fans, but there's certainly a sizable group that match the criteria.
I certainly would never expect an athlete to play multiple sports if they mean to take it seriously. I do agree with your last statement there though:
That's exactly what people should do, or at least ignore the sport rather than bash it or belittle it without ever trying to understand it. Will certainly have to give Yugo a shot though, it certainly looks interesting enough I'm just behind on some of my other releases because apparently no stores around here stock the 2nd volumes. |

I was also disappointed when Michelle Kwan announced that she had to withdraw from the Olympics due to her groin injury, but I completely understand why she did what she did. She wanted to skate at her very best in order to win that elusive gold medal, but unfortunaltely her body had other ideas. It's a shame that she had to leave the Olympics this way because she is a graceful and beautiful skater, and unfortunately she will go down as the best skater in the world never to win an Olympic gold medal. If Emily Hughes (the skater that replaced Kwan on the team) is anything like her older sister Sarah when she won the gold in 2002, we could witness something very special. Princess Tutu is a pure marvel. I'll go off-record and say that this title could be Junichi Sato's best series that he ever produced, and to me that's saying something because I'm one of the biggest Kaleido Star fans in the world, and I feel that KS is one of the best titles on the market. I don't know anything about ballet, but the compelling drama and the strength of the characters - not to mentioned the strong dub acting of Luci Christian, Jay Hickman, Chris Patton, and especially Jessica Boone (her best performance to date IMHO) - kept me captivated from Episode 1. Just goes to show why Sato is one of the best producers in the industry. 
Chris Beverage of Anime on DVD wrote in his review of Yugo Vol. 2 that viewers can appreciate Yugo more if they treat the series more like a movie rather than an actual series. I was going to try this philosophy when I watch the Russian arc once Volume 4 becomes available. I have Yugo Vol. 3 but I'm holding off watching it until I buy Volume 4. Overall, another solid column. Bamboo, and if you haven't seen Protoculture Addicts #87, there's a nice description of Ms. Dong in the Editorial section of the magazine. (There's also the picture of her cosplaying as Chise that I remember her posting on this forum some time ago.  )

Am I the only one who thinks people should just buy actual Kurosawa films rather than getting a so-so anime based on one? While I haven't seen all of it, Samurai 7 is a decent show, but making a fairly generic anime out of one of the greatest films in history is just a set-up for unfair comparissons. Maybe I'm just pumped up from re-watching Stray Dog today...

Let me also add in my support for this volume of Princess Tutu. I've never been a fan of magical girl series or ballet, but this series I can not only tolerate but greatly enjoy. Great and very fitting ending for this story arc.
Anyone who's skipping this one because they don't think they're part of the target audience should definitely give it a chance. One observation: did anyone else who's seen the episodes in this volume (#10-13) think that the series seemed to be emphasizing Krahe's and Tutu's cleavage? |

I didn't think Tutu even had cleavage! 
But now that you mentioned it, yeah, I think so. Still, it doesn't take away how wonderful the story was. |
