Just curious, aside from baseball, and motorsports, and the occasional soccer, (Football to the the Euros), what sports are showcased in anime? And what is the best sports moment you have seen in an anime?
For me, I liked the cycle and sidecar racing sequence from Oh! My Goddess. The way Belldandy moved, looked like they took a live-action shot of a professioanl race duo, and then painted it on cels. She moved at just the right times for each curve. The grace of it was so balletic? Is that a word? In fact, I had to remind myself it was anime, and Belldandy would not get her hair caught in a wheel. Weird to feel worried for her hair like that, but I guess that means they got the job done, eh? Golf, or gorofu, is big in Japan, are there any golf moments? Last edited by jaybug39 on Fri Mar 31, 2006 1:07 am; edited 1 time in total |

Ranma 1/2 had an incredible and incredibly hilarious Martial Arts Ice Skating compition. The way the partners were "switched" was wonderfully funny not to mention the antics of the other side, hitting on the "girls" and on each other.
And in the same series was the Martial Arts Gymnastic tournement which was even funnier. And don't forget The Prince of Tennis. |

Tons of them. You pick first. Even a lesser-known sport such as lacrosse has appeared in more than just one anime: spoiler[The Cat Returns] and spoiler[Pretty Cure] are two I can think of right now.
The production team did invite a professional sidecar racer couple (yes, they are married) and filmed the entire racing sequence. The special "making of A!MG movie" is included in the collector edition -- sorry, I'm not talking about R1.
Dan Doh!! and Pro Golfer Saru.
That one is mostly comedic, not realistic sports. For realistic ice skating, see Ginban Kaleidoscope or episode 7 of Kita e. |

I had my best spot moments watching Hajime no Ippo. It's top of my favorit animes and I never get fed up with it. Those figts are so awesome and they always come up with a new K.O tactic in the end.

Let me recommend Suzuka, a romantic comedy/drama that revolves around track and field (the title character is a high jumper). The focus of the show is on the romance (and it's a very well told romantic story) but the sports angle is more than just background scenery. You see practices, coaches strategizing, eating the right foods before a meet, people getting jittery before an event, joy of victory and pain of defeat- everything you experience in high school sports. All in all it's probably the best out of the short list of sports anime I've seen.

The Prince of Tennis is a good sports anime.
Even though i haven't seen all of it and am up to episode 21, its starting to get very interesting. Somehow, it got me hooked by watching the 1st 3 episodes. And i must say, its a addictive. So addictive that i started to learn how to play tennis! Im gona learn the 'Twist Serve'.....If its possible -DaZ |

I can't think of an anime I've seen or heard of that has something to do with Sumo Wrestling.

There's a couple of mangas but you're right, no anime. There is Pro-wrestling animes and mixed-martial arts anime. |

I forgot Sosuke Sagura's coaching of the club soccer team in Full metal Panic! Took a bunch of pantywaists, and turned them into psychotic soccer killers! His boot camp style drills, and miss Chidori's balls, rice balls that is, got them to be better than they were.
The realistic part for me was the training for the game, as opposed to the game. Except I never hauled logs in two a day practices. |

One of the last sports I ever expected to appear as an anime was American football. Boy was I surprised when I heard about Eyeshield 21, and even more so when I watched it and found that it was really good.
The other sport I thought might never get an anime is ice hockey, though I think it made a brief appearance is some older anime. But if they can make a show out of football then there may be hope for hockey. |

Eh, I wouldn't be that surprise if they made an ice hockey anime. There's already a popular jdrama call pride that is about ice hockey and there's a few manga like Shout Out Loud, in which the main character is a hockey player.

I would have to say the best sports moment in anime for me was the Baseball episode of Samurai Champloo. It was completely priceless. If you've seen it then you know what I'm talking about. I also really enjoyed Ryomas' matches against Kaidoh and Inui in the first couple episodes of Prince of Tennis.

Really? I might have to check that out. *Reads description in the encyclopedia* Hmmm, may not be to my liking, but I'll give it a chance. |

i like Eyeshield 21 too. not sure about sports in random anime those are mostly fillers eps, but there are many sports anime; almost every popular sports that you can name it. I wonder why they don't have a hockey anime, too.
