Well. Spoilers obviously:
Two new opponents are introduced, M and N.
In the current chapters in Japan, something is coming to an end, either the entire story, or the arch with M and N.
Maybe Ohba intends on bringing on the entire alphabet, maybe not. Who knows.

Either way, after that spoiler bit. The story was stretched to further cash in on its popularity. And it shows.
Tho its been getting a tad more exciting now, with "some" things coming to an end.
I hope I was vague enough to avoid spoiling.

Like Naruto, Death Note suffers from the lack of a strong protagonist; arguably, Light is (though not always was) the least intriguing character. This is specially true in regard to his development from idealistic genius to paranoid megalomaniac.

... ayee, thank you so much for saying that. I've been called names for complaining about Raito/Light's lack of personality. ^^
But I stand by my opinion. He's boring, bland, one-dimensional and this affects the story, since it is always the same, moral dilemmas are touched on the surface, but never examined. THe characters are not allowed to develop and change. They have their set opinion and stick with it until they die, which usually happens suddenly, in an uninspired way that suggests the author was simply getting rid of them.
Meh. I find it amazing that so many fans are still supporting it so stoutly. Finally have the popularity drop so Ohba will HAVE to end the series, if she obviously doesn't want to while it is popular...

Cant say anything wrong about Takeshi Obata tho, Death Note's artwork keeps getting better and better.

No, nothing against Obata, only lots and lots against Ohba. ;P
Obata has an absolutely gorgeous drawing style, but that is one more reason for me to hope DN will end soon and he will get to draw something more interesting. I'd kill to see a fantasy story with his art.
