Has this ever happened to you?
You're watching a series you enjoy (perhaps on the border of obsession). then all of a sudden, you notice how bad the animation can get? Well, that's basically the question I'm asking. It's not that hard, since there's quite a few out there. But at the same time, I'd rather not make this a list thread. Personally, I'd have to give this honor to "You're Under Arrest". Now don't get me wrong, it's good for a laugh or two and the characters are somewhat interesting. But the animation for the first two seasons always tended to vary in quality between episodes (sometimes even between scenes or shots during said episodes). Now that I've shared my opinion, what's yours? |

For me the thing that comes to mind most prominently is Aquarion. Oh god, those CG mechs look terrible. The drawn animation was pretty good however.
Actually I'm thinking now that a better example is Souko no Strain. That also had bad CG mechs, but the drawn animation was no good either. I still love the show though. |

Can I get the obligatory Attack on Titan out of the way?
For me, the great art direction is usually enough to hide the non-existent animation, but man, it can get pretty dire sometimes. There are entire episodes with almost no movement beyond panned stills. I saw a post pointing out all the different times in one episode that the exact same drawing of Levi was used with different backgrounds and lighting. It's so cheap it's almost funny. |

Revolutionary Girl Utena hands down. Despite being my #2 favorite of all time, I won't deny how BAD the animation can be.
I mean, I think it has in general great art direction, and it at least LOOKS nice...when the characters are standing still. When things start moving it gets problematic, and that's at it's worst during the duels. Every fight will probably have about...5 seconds of nice motion (not counting stock footage) but other than that? Man....there's this one fight between Utena and Touga where we see their silhouettes clashing, and it's supposed to look all cool and artsy but you can't help but notice that it just so STILLTED that it's hard to take seriously. |

Original Macross. For the most part, I think it's competent animation for its time, but there's these two specific scenes which no one can say look good. The first is I think ep 11 during Mac's break in. It looked like a slideshow quite literally. And this was supposed to be an action scene! In Robotech, Carl Macek must've looked at this scene and went "wow, we really need to distract people from noticing this is a slide show" so Max talks to himself pretty much the entire time during it. It's like a solid 30 seconds of wooooow that's bad animation.
Then, Max gets shafted again in episode 24 when he fights Miriya in the park. I guess there were more slides in this fight than the last one, but everyone is off model and hideous the entire time. And the backgrounds are terrible during it just to add insult to injury. Then, in Robotech, when they invented their first episode to pad out the series, most of their flash back was of that horrible fight scene, so we got treated to it again! I think the Robotech versions of these episodes should be legally free over on youtube and probably hulu and stuff if you're curious. |

for me it would probably be Mamotte Shugogetten and its sequel, they were funny and the action wasn't so bad plus i really enjoyed the story. the animation and art style left much to be desired frankly .
the art looked a lot older then it was considering its time of production. and it was choppy in places. i noticed it right around the beginning of the first episode but once the story got rolling i couldn't find it in my self to care anymore i was too busy enjoying my self. |

I love the Digimon franchise, but except for maybe Xros Wars, all of the shows seem to have an incredibly low animation budget.

Pretty much the entire episode, "Virgin Road", is pretty badly animated. In the original Macross that tended to happen quite a few times with some of the outsourced episodes of the series. |

One series that I adore but must freely admit is very unimpressive in its animation is The Story of Saiunkoku. Watching the fight scenes is almost a painful experience, but fortunately the series commonly avoids detailing them and the series does not depend on that aspect to carry it.
I don't think many would dispute that Fruits Basket also has fairly limited animation, yet I still greatly enjoy that one, too. Like Saiukoku, it focuses much more on the characters than the visuals so it can get away with that. (Although SoS is still a very pretty series.) |

A few that popped into my mind are The Tatemi Galaxy, Initial D: First Stage and Nana, the latter which I marathoned in about 3 days. The artwork for Nana wasn't exactly what I was used to at first but the story and characters were brilliant towards me and is one of the best romance series I've ever watched.

Tatami Galaxy had bad animation?What are you on man,Tatami Galaxy has some pretty insane and kinetic animation a lot of famous names worked on it. As for my favorite show with bad animation,that title goes to Jojos Bizzare adventure (2012),it had obviously low budget but it made for it with very good directing. |

Ragnarok the Animation but I noticed it long before I watched the series as the opener is pretty bad but I like it, a light fantasy MMORPG adaptation with some good characterizations and villains, that goat god/thing in particular was amazing and a good ending that felt as if the characters went on a journey and learned and developed. It's a lot better than the similar Tower of Druaga which, as a Gonzo series, has its own animation problems. |

His and Her Circumstances is probably my favorite terribly animated series. The character designs aren't all that bad (with the chibi/comical versions being particularly enjoyable), but the colors are dreary, the drawings are less than crisp, and the movements are shaky; literally, every time the scene/cel changes, there's a noticeable twitch on screen. I know there were budget issues and a major staff change towards the end of the series, so I can understand. It also helps that the show itself is good enough to overlook something as major as terrible animation. I would LOVE to see a remake of this show though!
Speed Grapher is another one that comes to mind. Loved the show, but hated most of the visuals. Character movements can be a bit jerky and their designs are less than detailed. Action sequences suffer from stilted animation too. |

I've tried to get fans to educate themselves on the Old Skool I grew up with--
But every time I try to get them to watch the primitive late-70's animation of Lupin III, the Robotech-era 80's Sunrise stiffness of Dirty Pair TV, or the rather loosely drawn animation of the first Sailor Moons or Slayers, I keep hearing "Eww, it looks, like, old!"

As much as I like Saber Marionette J, the animation makes it look like it's from the 80s/early 90s instead of late 90s (at least to me).
