Shaenon Garrity just posted this hilarious review of the often strange world of author columns in shojo manga. You've gotta love that publishers translate this stuff no matter how lucid or strange it gets. Hilarious stuff..... I always love reading these little columns, and when you've read enough of them, you really do get a strange picture of how isolated, boring and kooky cartoonists can get. |

Thanks for sharing this, Paploo, it was quite interesting.
I don't read Black Bird (at least not yet), so I'm curious as to whether or not those racy side pieces get included in the Viz release? Although I suppose if it's rated OT+ it would be fine...? |

Shaenon is an editor for VIZ, so the artwork she uses in a number of her manga columns is generally scanned from the VIZ editions. She seems to be referring to the english editions for the most part [w/1 mention of stuff from an untranslated volume I assume she's have access to via VIZ], so I imagine they are indeed included in the english edition Black Bird [which sounds to have way more racier content in the actual book, so no reason not to include the asides I guess]. |

The part about the eating disorder was really sad. She sounded so nonchalant about only eating green soybeans for an entire month, which is one of the main indicators of an eating disorder. I hope someone (her editor, perhaps?) got help for her.

I used to laugh at these when I was younger, but now, after aging past 21, and attending an art school with a focus on sequential/comic book art with plenty of other girls my age...
I now realize it: as the geek girl/comic book artist type, we're rather... anti-social in the fact we like to lock ourselves in our studios and draw all day, giggle to each other over the latest comic book/and or cute actor-singer, go on about perverted things in relation, and then we either get drunk alone, or invite a small number of friends over to get wasted. ... I need to get out more. The occasional boyfriend however fixes this, and it has me wondering about some manga-ka's love life with their hectic deadlines sometimes. Also another solution are the occasional friends kidnapping you away from your projects for the night. As to soy beans; as a very poor (vegetarian) college student I find endamame as a delicious cheap meal (one you can easily eat while doing other things). And though I don't think that author's eating habits are very good, I wouldn't call her anorexic. Endamame are full of protein, calories, and vitamins. It is my dream to make it big enough so that I may one day have a chance encounter with CLAMP at some sort of comic convention, and then get wasted with them. This has been my dream now for some years. Yuko from XXXholic only encouraged this dream further. |

What I like is that a lot of mangaka are/were into videogames. A lot of them mention playing the new Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, but it's even more fun when one of them starts talking about series like Shin Megami Tensei or Suikoden. Saki Hawatari (Please Save My Earth) is the queen of Suikoden fangirls. It's almost scary. No, it is scary. She even based a character in Tower of the Future on her favourite Suikoden character (Viktor).

I quite enjoy the little notes at the end of the books, i think rikdo koshi does my favorite ones but even the pure text ones can be entertaining such as the ones at the end of hellsing where i found out that kohta hirano enjoys watching E.R and lists one of his hobbies as "jacking off"

This article made me giggle. I, for one, have always enjoyed reading Yuu Watase's side bars. And I also always cracked up at Love*Com's side notes. Tail of the Moon also had a similar scene illustration like Black bird that I usually find highly entertaining. But I will admit to generally ignoring them. I like when artists chose to use that space to add extra art and the like.

That article is awesome!
I just read Tower of the Future, and whoa! Videogame Otaku Alert! Hiwatari loves to wright about her fave RPGs. I have never played RPGs, but her gushing about Final Fantasy and Suikoden makes me curious... She even got to meet the Suikoden creators, which was probably a dream come true for her! She predicted that by 2008, Final Fantasy would be up to volume 13. A friend of mine told me that vol 12 came out around then, and vol 13 came out this year, so she wasn't too far off in her decade ago prediction! It's more fun for me to read her takes on American movies, since I'm familiar with them, and her literary discussion of Kenji Miyazawa's "Night on the Galactic Railroad" Then there's her take on Neon Genesis Evangelion:
 
Even more interesting was her discussion about religion. Her manga are centered around big themes of destiny and reincarnation, and she seems to really love these ideas. She writes about her appreciation for Buddhism and how she imagines that Buddha is watching over her, possibly from a multi-dimension standpoint! Her beliefs are interesting and pretty cool! My favorite story was a touching recount about how an old friend of hers got in touch with her because she (her friend) had, for the first time in her 30s, wrote and published a manga. She reminded Hiwatari that back when they were younger, she had promised that if she ever managed to publish a manga she would treat Hiwatari to dinner. Hiwatari's response: "Shouldn't I treat her to dinner?" was so sweet! Then she wrote about how it's never too late to realize owns dreams, make your debut and fulfill one's destiny. That really made me smile.  I'm an aspiring writer, and the whole account was so inspirational!
I want to meet Saki Hiwatari and take her out to dinner!
