I don't know about all of you, but occasionally I run across a series I fall in love with even though the show doesn't deserve a particularly high rating no matter how I look at it.

The series I just saw the other week was Stellvia, and oh my god. I sat down and watched it until it was 8 in the morning and there wasn't any more to watch. It's like some sort of bizarre cross of my favorite book Ender's Game and one of the most oddly satisfying space games I've ever played: "Freelancer". I gave the show an 8 at first, but after thinking about it, I just had to give it a 9, and now it's only with brute force that I keep myself from changing the rating any more.

The animation wasn't that great, the characters were kind of annoying after a while, the end was pretty hoaky in my opinion, the amazingly real plot ended about half-way through the series... but I absolutely LOVE this show and it bugs the crap outta me. I almost cry everytime I watch the intro Embarassed Though the intro was a little different, I hated it at first but came to love it Wink

Anyone else have a series that robbed them of all ability to be rational about them? (and "why do you like it?" so the forum nazis don't bitch slap me and falsely accusing me of not reading the "list" rule Wink )

My guilty pleasure anime is Futakoi. It is pretty much a normal harem anime except there's two of each girl, so it's basically a massacre of twins. The main character was kind of awkward, the premise was pretty cliche, it has all the "typical" setups in harem anime (beach, school life, etc.), and when I look back, it was pretty lame.

Regardless, I really enjoyed it when I watched it. I don't exactly know why; maybe it was because one pair of twins were voiced by Horie Yui and Koshimizu Ami, maybe it was because Sara and Sonju Kurogane were really cute in polar ways, maybe it was because I was jealous of the male lead Nozomu (he gets 10 girls instead of 5!), but I enjoyed it nontheless. spoiler[I felt sorry for Nozomu when one of the twins that he liked was going out with the other guy, I wanted the rich girl twins to stay in the town even though I didn't like them before, and I felt immersed in the world when they went to the estate (even though the animation wasn't particularly great).] There was just *something* about the series that made me like it.

Based on enjoyment alone, I probably would have given it an "Excellent," and based on the actual quality of the series, I probably would've given it a...pretty awful rating, but I compromised the two, and rated it "Good."

Most definately. Galaxy Angel. Really, I don't think it's the best show ever created but I just absolutely love it. Enough for it to be my favorite anime. I have no problem marathoning all 4 seasons of this anime (which I've done before twice as of now). Reasons are as followed (copyed from another thread I wrote in):

PantsGoblin wrote:
Basically, it's a pretty funny show that I really enjoy watching and love the characters as well as the seiyuu. IMO, GA is different from other anime comedies. People seem to always say how GA is so cliched and all, I don't see any of that in it. GA was one of the earlier "cute" animes with "random" elements in it and because it was released rather late in the US, it just seemed to be more cliched then it actually was. Still, GA stands out to me even after that. The feeling of the anime was unlike any of the other comedies I saw before it. The majority of the jokes in the show (especially in the later seasons) I haven't ever seen used in any other anime. The plot of the show never really goes anywhere either (something I hate about comedies is when they mess it up by trying to add in a serious plot *cough*dokurochan*cough*) so it can be watched in any order. Even stuff like Excel Saga I think should be watched in order. Sometimes the show will start in abstract ways and nothing will really be that clear until the episode is over. Often times it never even fully explains what has happened. I just really liked how it did that. I really didn't think it was that cliched and thought it was actually kind of unique.

Also, do the visuals in the intro for Stellvia ever change? I just find it kind of lazy when they use visuals from the show (in this case, the first episode) in the opening. For some reason, Gonzo always seems to do this... although they did eventually change it in Kiddy Grade to having no animation from the show in the opening, I'm just wondering if they do the same here.

This isn't keeping me from watching it btw. I'm just wondering.

Edit: I've thought about the reason I like Galaxy Angel SO much for a bit and want to expand on it.

Really, from an outward appearance this series honestly seems pretty run-of-the-mill. I don't think it is. There must be something special about Galaxy Angel for it to produce 6 video games (with 5 on the PC/PS2/XBox, one on the GBA ,and limited edtion and regular releases as well as a few re-releases), 4 anime series (with a 5th one in the making), 26+ manga/art books (more if you include the Galaxy Angel II manga... plus all the doujinshi which I can't list), at least 50+ music CDs/drama CDs (this is just an estimation from what I've seen, I'm actually thinking there may be even more Edit: I counted 70 CDs on cdjapan. Actually, I know there's even more then that because I have a few that weren't listed there and I've seen some that weren't there on Yahoo Japan auctions.) a massive amount of merchindise (this is just an extremely small sample of it), two musicals, and even Galaxy Angel billboards. No, for a non-shounen to produce all of that, I don't think this series is run-of-the-mill.

I've tried to think of a few more reasons as to why I like the Galaxy Angel franchise so much and this is what I came up with:

1. It reminds me a lot of American cartoons, which I've loved since I was little.
2. I have no girlfriend and this is a series full of girls.
3. The huge amount of merchindise surrounding this series just feeds me more.
4. Stand alone episodes allow me to watch the series in any order. Sometimes I just think of an episode I like and rewatch it. No need to watch any previous episodes to get into it.
5. I really like "random" and "parody" humor for some reason. Galaxy Angel uses a lot of that.
6. No fanservice. I usually don't like that kind of stuff in an anime series. That's what the doujinshi are for...
7. I love the very happy and light music of the series. There's SO many CDs to collect...
8. The video games are beyond awesome. With a far more serious tone to them, they're more of a love/drama/sci-fi with RPG elements, nice graphics and a great story.

Also, this is unrelated, but I NEED a Milfeulle plushie. I know one exists because I saw it in the background of the GATV DVDs I bought (yes, there's also a live-action TV show too). I just need to find it... maybe it's just really rare.

For me it would be the Zoids franchise. Anime smile + sweatdrop Absolutely love the series, especially Chaotic Century. I don't know why I love it so much and generally find other mecha shows uninteresting... It's probably because it's the only well-known animal-based mecha series I can think of. And the models are absolutely kickass.

Nope, never changes... very lazy indeed. It's not all from the first episode, but my problem isn't that it's reused footage, but that it doesn't all make SENSE. wth is with showing her in the bathroom washing her hands of all things?

Having said that, I also am perfectly ok with them using footage from the first episode in this case (I can't think of any other show I was ok with this), because it constantly gives me that feeling of nostalgia. It reminds me of that feelings I got when they were heading to the Stellvia and makes me so excited because the whole thing just seems so reminiscent to Ender's Game, the only book that makes me cry in both a good and a bad way just thinking about it. (If you've only seen and liked either the show or the book you should check out the other! Well... no, I just think everyone should read that book.)

I don't know if I liked it more than I should have, but I definitely felt like I wathced more of Tokyo Mew Mew than I probably should have.

I felt kind of icky after about 4 or 5 episodes, not sure why, but probably because it seemed to be aimed at tween-aged girls and I'm an over-30 male! But like I said, I can't say I really liked it, I justed needed 4 or 5 episodes to decide I didn't!

(BTW - No offense intended if this really is a popular one with older guys, it's also possible I just didn't get it.)

I've heard a lot of people say that G Gundam was the worst Gundam series but I loved it and thought it was the best. Also some anime that's my all time favorite that I just love is Yu Yu Hakusho and Cowboy Bebop.

Hunter x Hunter is my love too. I usually enjoy shonen but don't adore it the way I do other anime. But, HH is practically an obsession for me. I have all the tv series, all three ovas, two musicals, and all sorts of merchandise. I should add here that I normally only buy anime merchandise or posters for my daughter. I just don't have room for stuff like that.

But, ah for Hunter x Hunter...what I wouldn't do. I'd roll around in it if I could...well, that might be taking it too far. Smile

wow just letting you know that Nazi isn't a very friendly term to be using with people who work hard on these boards and aren't being paid. Also that word Nazi is a very powerful and has a lot of history behind it, don't throw it around like it means nothing.

Onto the topic at hand.........I wonder where I am going to go with this? How about Monster only the greatest series ever created. I am upset with show, the people in it their feelings, the emotions, the question of good and evil. To the very nature of man, this series is something that consumes me. You don't watch Monster, Monster watches you.
Till next time,

Oh my GOD, your just like me. I love Ender's Game. It is the best book that I have ever put my hands on. Just because you said Stellvia reminds you of Ender's Game, I'm going to get Stellvia and watch it as soon as possible. Thanks a million.

I'm sorry for getting out of the topic.
The anime that I like more than I should have is Chrno Crusade. I loved every second more than I should have because of the character Chrono. I simply love that name. I think that name gives a subtle tone for the chacracter. Chrono seems to be a character with a calm attitude, but ruthless when evil stands in the way. Maybe the reason why I like the name Chrono is because I am in love with Chrono Trigger, a Squaresoft game for Super Nintendo. In that game there is also a character named Chrono with similar characteristics.

Yeah, I had that going with that show too. I don't know if their personalities are the same as much as it's the look alike factor, but I had a hard time being objective about the show until I was on like episode 13ish. I started watching it based solely on the name, but the association wasn't nearly as strong as the Stellvia one for me, so I was able to "pull myself out of it" Wink

delta, sorry if you're offended by my choice of words, but it's an extremely common saying. I used that exact phrase while thinking about the cookie monster scene in family guy, but either way I do think that the moderators close too many threads way too soon. Specifically in regards to closing threads where the original poster didn't put in "enough" of his own opinion. I don't see what's so wrong with someone simply asking "what do you guys think about [blank] in 'such and such' context?" obviously the majority of those threads are rightfully closed, but I think the mods should ask "why did they post this in the first place?" and if it's a legitmate question that people would probably be interested in it, let it slide. I've seen a number of threads I was interested in closed unneccesarrily (in my opinion) and I'm voicing my dissent.

Also delta, I probably should have been more clear, but you seem to think monster was done well and should be a favorite (I do too), but I'm trying to find if people had shows like they liked more than they DESERVED to be liked from a completely objective point of view.

Me and my siblings were crazy about Pokemon. We'd buy the manga, cards, games and made sure to watch the show everynight it was on. It was expensive to be ever loyal fans to the show. Glad we grew out of it.

s-CRY-ed. I love it. I need it. I can't get enough of it. I DON'T KNOW WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

It's not all that well written, the story is kind of thin, the voice acting could be MUCH better... I mean, it's pretty as HELL, and has some of the best battle sequences ever, but...
