Inuyasha TV
Plot Summary: Kagome Higurashi, after being pulled down a well by a demon, finds herself in Sengoku period of feudal Japan, where she learns that a powerful jewel has been reborn inside her body. After the jewel shatters in an attempt to retrieve it from one of the many demons who was after its power, Kagome must join forces with the half-demon Inu Yasha (also after the jewel's power) to track down the shards of the jewel before its power falls into the wrong hands. We needed a general thread because the series is awesome and people want to talk about it so...here it is. Please use spoiler tags. Not all of us (ME) have seen Final Act yet. Two things about Rumiko Takahashi. She likes rom-coms and silly shenanigans....so she drew manga like that. She likes horror and darkness so she drew manga like that too. Then one day, she said, HEY, WHY DON'T WE COMBINE THEM? Brilliant idea. Like thousands of other teens across the country, I fell in love with the show when it premiered on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim over a decade ago (WHAT). I was familiar with Rumiko's style and characters because I rented Ranma 1/2 and Mermaid's Scar on VHS (hey, remember those things?) Eventually I got fed up with Ranma because Akane was annoying but most of all, the voice-acting kept changing. Remember, subbed anime on VHS in rental stores was practically unheard of back then, and so was Bittorrent so yes, I had little choice in how to watch my anime. Beggers can't be choosers. But Inuyasha was a gift. Why? It had everything I liked. Occult themes, demons, mythology, traditional Japanese culture, wide-eyed kids, animal ears, romance, hilarity, quick-to-finish battles, and drama. With a dose of likable characters, an easy plot to follow, careful writing, stellar voice acting (in both tracks) and an absolutely fantastic OST, I thought AND STILL THINK this is honestly quite a solid anime series that holds up very well even today. So I kind of get annoyed when people say "it sucks". My response is just "....um...have you watched it? Like recently? In chronological order?" The only complaint I have about the entire show is "TOO MANY FLASHBACKS REPEATING OVER AND OVER". I don't like being treated like I have a memory of a goldfish. Yes, Naraku screwed up Kikyou and Inuyasha's lives and Sango's and Miroku's and pretty much every soul the slippery bastard has come in contact with, (even dead ones). We know this. It's so important. STOP SHOWING IT. WE WILL NOT FORGET SOMETHING THIS IMPORTANT. Except this kinda stopped by season 4. Fillers? I don't find fillers to be worthy of complaining about either. Not every single one is important to the plot, no...but nobody goes out of character, filler characters are tolerable, plus you can expect to get at least one laugh, if not a whole bunch of them; hell, you might even get some cute moments with your ships. The writers are not idiots, minus the flashback-obsession thing. Running gags? Ehhhh these are hit and miss. I will forever find "Sit, boy!" hilarious. It just is. Any reference to him being a dog is hilarious, because he'll actually adhere to it before catching himself five seconds too late and getting really mad. Myouga running away is probably the most worn out running gag...because it's not really that funny to begin with.....yet they keep doing it. Shippou being useless....actually there are times when he's not...and it's normally a crucial time, so that's okay. Miroku being a pervert? Sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's not. All I know is that I was rolling around on the floor during his battle with the Hakurei barrier. HE'S SO DETERMINED TO GRAB THAT BUTT....and it was agonizing to him that he could not. Who's that dedicated to butt-groping, I ask you? I love ridiculous scenarios being played out as dramatic as possible. Plus it was Sango's butt. With any random woman, it wouldn't be that funny...but it was of course Sango's butt that he wanted and that changes everything. Now I want to talk about the characters and how there is no reappearing character that I honestly hate. This is a good thing. Higurashi Kagome The show may have her boyfriend's name, but she is the main protagonist. And she is a good one. You can rely on Takahashi for strong female characters and Kagome is no exception. Unless she is unconscious, (which really doesn't happen all that much) Kagome always fights to the best of her abilities, using every available resource around her. This shows she is intelligent and strong-willed. She is also very brave, kind, considerate, and understanding. She has other interests besides her love life and takes being a student quite seriously as best she can. I do not understand why people do not like this girl. It's normally stupid reasons like "she screams his name all the time". Um....yes? This is f**king feudal Japan. If the person you cared about the most was constantly in peril, I'm pretty sure you'd be screaming their name every day too! Anyway, Kagome's love for Inuyasha is seriously admirable. This didn't sink in for me until my recent rewatch. But holy crap, is she dedicated to him. Not only is she dedicated, she gives him his space and supports him unconditionally. This is such a rare thing in anime, PARTICULARLY shounen anime. She gets angry at Inuyasha? Of course she does, she's human. A girl has every right to be angry with a guy who isn't 100% faithful to her, yet still wants her. She SHOULD. If she didn't, I would take that to mean she had no self-respect, and I would not respect her as much as I do now. So if he keeps pissing her off and hurting her heart, why does she stay with him? Because she loves him. See, this is what love is. It's not all smiles and rainbows and happy times. It is accepting a person entirely; that includes their good points AND bad points. It's also knowing when to give and take, what to accept and when to draw the line and to say "Hey, this is not okay with me". And Kagome demonstrates this beautifully. Inuyasha (nobody had last names in the feudal era, I take it?) I love him. Seriously love him. Sometimes he makes me angry...but I think it's good if you DON'T agree with a characters' actions all the time....because think about it, when's the last time you agreed with a person's actions all the time? Never? Yes, that's what I thought. The general opinion I get from anti-fans is that Inuyasha is that "he's just a selfish jerkass". And once again, I reply, "....have you seen him? Have you paid attention to his character at all?" Because he is, in fact, not. He is rude. He is a bad boy. He is selfish...sometimes. And then we get an episode where he decides to take care of a sick baby lynx demon, or one (try dozens) where he nearly gets killed to save his friends, or one where he dives into a deadly pit to rescue someone he hates spoiler[Kouga] "because it's obviously what Kagome would want." Nope, she didn't even need to open her mouth-he just automatically does it. Yeah.....what a jerk. It should be no secret to this forum that I cannot resist a tsundere. If you didn't know that, you do not know me at all.  Both male and female; when I see one, I so much want to glomp them tight and tousel their hair, gleefully screaming, "YOU'RE NOT FOOLING ANYONE, YOU GIANT CRUNCHY MARSHMALLOW". Because that is what they are. Crunchy marshmallows. Or a Three Musketeers. Delicious. :'D
Inuyasha is about as tsundere as tsundere gets. He was a jerk in the beginning because he didn't trust anyone because there was no reason for him to trust anyone. He trusted his mommy but then she died, he was on his own as a half-demon "freak child" and everyone on BOTH sides either ignored him or tried to kill him. So you can't expect a kid to grow up showing kindness to others when the kid has never been taught how to do so. I do not believe he was a terrible guy even back then. Afterall, he trusted Kikyou. But then that went to hell, so fifty years of sleep later, did you expect him to immediately welcome another woman (who looks just like the last one) with open arms? Of course not. The boy is now freaking paranoid! Like a animal being cornered, he will turn his fear into hostility....because that's the only way he can protect himself...and I don't mean just physically. Contrary to belief, Inuyasha is not stupid. He's actually pretty clever. "But he's a two-timer!" Well.....yes, kinda, in a sense. But he's also in a very difficult situation. Boy meets girl, boy loves girl, boy loses girl while hating her, boy meets and starts to like another girl, but then first girl spoiler[comes back from the dead.] Not that people could actually do this...but if a widower remarried and suddenly meets his undead first wife again....well....um. .......yeeeeeeeeeeeah. lol People who lose loved ones by death are able to move on with another loved one mainly because the first loved one is now gone. They now have closure. Inuyasha's crush on Kagome started before Kikyou was spoiler[revived] and they learned about Naraku, so not only does he no longer have closure, he has a guilt trip to go with it, on top of that, his spoiler[zombie] ex-girlfriend is wandering about and still demands his attention. Good lord, what a mess! "But he beats up Shippou!" BECAUSE SHIPPOU TROLLS HIM. So much. Really, aside from Naraku, Shippou is the biggest troll in the show. Don't tell me he's a kid so he doesn't know any better because yes, he does. He knows better and he knows exactly what buttons to push to piss off his short-tempered "onii-chan". (He does it with Miroku too, but making Miroku mad just isn't as rewarding) And he doesn't learn because he keeps doing it over and over. So this tells me he either likes the attention or he thinks pissing off Onii-chan is worth getting a bop to the head, which, let's be honest, is pretty harmless. Inuyasha and Shippou might pick on each other but they also care deeply about one another, like actual brothers. He is always protecting the little boy from real danger, he praises him when it's appropriate to do so, and just looks out for him in general. Not to mention when spoiler[Inuyasha supposedly "falls to his death", Shippou was bawling his eyes out.]I think that means something, don't you? :'D Ha, this is turning into an essay (because I love to write about things I love) so I'm going to continue this later...anyway, this is fun for me. :3 |
