I just saw on my TiVo that Eureka 7 has moved to a much later time slot. Following in the foot steps of other Mech Anime shows on CN such as Gundam SEED and IGPX. This got me thinking, "Is Mech Anime in the US dead?"
I can understand why Gundam SEED didn't catch on. My 13 year old nephew says it was too slow. I can see that, not everyone grew up with Robotech. However, I thought folks would like Eureka 7 and love IGPX. Have people turned their backs on big mechs or does CN not know what they are doing? (Like Fox when they cancel shows such as Family Guy, Firefly, etc.) |

Current trend seems to be shounen rather than mech. Whether it was a smart move I dont know, but I think they are just trying to go with the flow right now.

Wouldn't you consider Mech shounen? Teenagers always seem to end up as pilots.

I'm more just speaking about the genre that is most prominent in the anime. I'm sure most mech shows has shounen as part of its genre discription as well, but the definitive values of the genre may not be as noticeable.

Well...for what it is worth....they put Big-O back on tv.....and Big-O is one of the lesser welcomed mech series(I personally loved it, and truely believe we need a 3rd season.....).

It looks to me like the industry might be trying to milk a dead cow on this one, mech anime to me was never that interesting, however, mech-games certainly aren't dead in Japan. I was over there two months ago and they are one of the top genres in Japan at the moment. They were all over the arcades and there would be a various age range of people playing them. From kids to middle aged guys, and they also had versus machines also.

Oh, mech is huge in Japan. There is no slowing down there whatsoever. But it definitely doesnt have as much of a fan-base in US.
It's impossible to make a sequal when the ending is spoiler[a reset button]. |

It's simply trends, like is present in most things. You see it in movies and in standard television, anime really isn't immune to it either. The common interests of the fanbase are elsewhere right now, down the road the trends will likely move down another line and possibly we could even see a return of styles that have taken a back seat, like mecha.

A lot of American anime fans see mecha programs as simply about "giant robots" and fail to look beyond the surface of a mecha show because "giant robots are for little kids" or "giant robot shows were for people living in the 70s".
I would personally love to see classic mecha shows like Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Macross, Aura Battler Dunbine, Tekkaman Blade, and Space Runaway Ideon (which has never been licensed domestically) make an appearance on local cable, and perhaps some newer mecha programs like Zone of Enders or Fafner as well. But mecha is generally seen as just a "nostalgia thing" and not for the merits of the programs themselves. |

I'd like to see some of the classic mecha shows! I've been watching Macross now, and I really like it
The only other giant robot show I'm into is Eva, but that's on a whole different level....
I never caught on to Gundam. I triend to get into Wing because I like BL/yaoi, but it never seemed that interesting to me-just a buch of angsty bishonen angsting and whatnot. SEED just didn't look interesting. I'm interested in seing the original though! |

Yes.....but we still have quite a few questions unanswered, plus they still haven't shown the 4th Mega Deus, the Big Venus....... |

I don't think that's exactly true. They had plans for a third season, and even though it was spoiler[reset], there were some differences. Too bad, I'da loved to see where Big O went after that whacked-up ending. |

The ending we have now is due to the fact that the planned third season was scrapped, and they had to wing something to wrap the story up really quickly. More than likely, the spoiler[reset] was not at all how things were planned to end, but was the best the producers could come up with on short notice. |

Is Mech Anime on TV dead? I ask you; "When was it alive?"
I know there is an answer for that considering the popularity of shows like Robotech, but when was the last mech show accepted by US fans? Even American made Mech shows failed. Megas XLR was a really funny mech show, but never got past a second season. My friend said the other day; "People don't bother with mech anime now-a-days", when I asked him if he had read about Jinki:Extend. I think we live in a society that would much rather have super powers, than an extremely powerful giant robot... can we blame them? |

I think people nowadays could still like classics such as Martian Successor Nadesico since it's not ALL mech. What's happening is more people want to watch the romance/drama/shoujo/shounen type things, but they're not incorporating them well enough into the mecha series as well as they used to. What's the point of people randomly beating the crap out of each other in giant robots if there's no real reason to do it? Personally, I would love to see more mecha anime, but I would also love for them to come up with better plots (as for Eureka 7, I only saw part of one episode, and I just don't like the dubs for it, guess I'm just too accustomed to subs
 ).
