Hi, as you can see, I'm looking for a new sports anime that can fit my needs. I haven't seen much of this, really only one, called "Oliver y Benji" in spain ("Captain Tsubasa" is its original name) and I liked it, but there were some problems with the series.
Let's start with the "likes": I liked the whole football idea, so mostly football, and the story as well (being the champions thru practice). I kind of liked the old style (it was from the 80s ...and the "dislikes": It wasn't so realistic, really. You can't jump that high and shoot that ... weird, so I disliked that a lot. But, I would like a totally non-serious anime and 100% unrealistic, but since this one was one of the more serious ones, I didn't like the unrealistic parts. It's a series on 128 episodes, and that's a bit much for me right now. I would like 20-40 episodes, or a new started anime (aired on some television, spanish, english or japanese, so I can watch it and wait for the first dvd-release or something), so I can catch up with it, got a lot to watch in not so much time. So, basically: football (or other big global sport, like athletics or basketball) anime, 20-40 episodes, new or old doesn't make a difference; either totally unrealistic and non-serious or the opposite. A good story, or the old fashion "be the best"-story, but not some kind of sick weird story that I've seen at some places. And, if possible, avoid the high school themes. Another thing that you can notice in the topic name; this is for my bored times, so really, anything possible will be accepted. If anyone knows about a fitting anime, reply soon as possible. Thank you in advance, Michael. |

Might I suggest Whistle!? It's the story of a young boy who isn't given a chance at a prestigious soccer/football school, so he leaves and joins a no-name school and hopes to build a team. He's not a very good player, but works the hardest to achieve talent. It's 39 episodes, vintage 2002, focuses on a realistic style of the sport, and has a good "be the best" story to it. I haven't watched much of the anime, so I'm basing it on the manga. It's a good series, this coming from someone who doesn't care much for the sport at all. |

He actually did everything I could've hoped for. Unfortunately, their aren't many sports anime that I know of in the first place, so I'll leave it to anyone else that's more knowledgeable of this genre.

I haven't seen it, but Eyeshield 21 gets good reviews. Unfortunately, it is unlicensed. I don't think you were talking about American football, though. However, you did just ask for "sports" with nothing particular.
Also, there's Prince of Tennis. It's obviously about tennis, and it also gets good reviews. I'm pretty sure tennis is a global sport. You can watch dubs of it on Toonami Jetstream. I've also heard of Slam Dunk, which covers the basketball theme you were asking about. I hope I've been of use to you, EmDiPi_Micke. |

hajime no ippo is a anime about an upcomming boxer and his struggles to get the top. Its really addicting show and its almost impossible not to root for the main character. It may seem long being 76 episodes long, but its great. The characters in it are really funny too. Just a overall good show.

My god i can't reccomend Eyeshield 21 enough! The only thing i think you wouldnt like is it is high school, but with sports manga / anime its kind of hard to avoid. And its a manga, but those are the 2 things i think you wouldnt like. I dont really like Whistle or Prince of Tennis, because they were too serious for me, and Eyeshield seems like it would fit you perfectly. I think its very underrated, because noone really talks about it. Its a Japanese look on how they play football, and all of the characters are great and grow at a good pace, and its freakin hilarious! Now, i never really have seen the anime, but i read the manga, and its awesome. Definately on my Top 5 manga of all time. Check it out, for sure. There are 16 volumes and currently im on volume 8, the newest one. I think youll love it!

Thank you for all your answers
I've heard of Prince of Tennis (I think it was in Comic Party, but maybe not), and I have tought of watching it, and since I got the recommendation, I will. Whistle and Eyeshield does also sounds very interesting, so I'll look into that too. And I do realize that the high school thing isn't so easy to avoid, but I can live with that. I'd be happy if more recommendations come in |

The only thing is, Prince of Tennis definitely doesn't fit into your plan of the series being 20-40 episodes. It's 178 episodes long, plus a random OAV episode, plus a movie, plus a recently started OAV series. Just thought I'd warn you. That's the reason I didn't recommend it myself--and that you were kind of hoping for something with more realistic sports action, and PoT is anything but realistic. Still a fun show overall, although I think it would have done just fine being half as long as it was. |

YAHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At last a Captain Tsubasa fan here!!!! Ever tried watching the other versions of the series? Like Captain Tsubasa J (48 chapters) or ROAD (52)? I personally recommend CTJ (music, character design and a little more on the story) And though I think you may not like it, try Hungry Heart Wild Striker. It's from the same author, Takahashi Yoichi, and it's HILARIOUS. There might even be a bit of data that may please you TestamentSaki, a bona-fide Captain Tsubasa fan |

I'll see if I can try those out
Actually, I like every anime. Almost. The Diary of Tortov Roddle and Naruto (because of the fillers, duh) isn't my style, but every other anime works for me, really |

Watch Whistle, or Capeta is your really desparate. The one thing I don't suggest is Buzzer Beater. Not only did they get a bad voice actor for the character, the plot and story is horrible.

while i do recommend Eyeshield 21 as a hilarious sports series. you really might not like the unrealism of it. stuff like super speed and the like. if you really want it, look for the many baseball titles. i don't no which ones, if any, are licensed.

Princess Nine, yes, it's about a girl's baseball team, but it has it all, action, drama, comedy and interesting characters. Plus you can buy the complete series for a few bucks
And I'll second the Eyeshield 21 suggestion as well. |
