Whether you use $2 sketchpad or $200 digital device, it's the skill level that matters. A skilled artist can handle both.
Personally, I'd rather use $2 sketchpad for practice and $200 device for elaborate works and demonstrations.

There's nothing like pencil and paper for sketching. And I bet most digital artists still start their illustrations that way before scanning them in. On the other hand, digital inking and coloring is infinitely more flexible.
