I have an avatar problem too, and I hope you don't mind if I post it under here. I'm wondering if I could use an avatar that I've saved onto my computer.

You can't use an avatar if it's just on your computer. You need to upload it to a webhost that allows outside linking, and then specify that url in your profile.
