When the biggest plus is that every girl has a different figure. That should make you just stop and think for a minute about what kind of manga this really is.

I wrote a MU/amazon review recently after finding out about the sales figures and flipping though it again. I wasn´t surprised to see that the series became a bit of a rape fantasy as softcore porn harem tend to do that after a handful of volumes...

An unerotic harem waste 3/10
Reviewer Dickegrobe already said all with his assent that the series has been assembled with a manga construction kit for beginners so i will keep the actual critique short and focus on what should be read instead. The avatar MC is the typical virgin wimp who gets all the "women" due to a deus-ex-machia as this is how porno/harem works while the readers objects of attraction are a quirky girl next door (the snake), a Yamato Nadeshiko (the horse), a tomboy (the bird), a bisexual temptress (the spider) and a Rei clone may have joined the cast too but i can´t care to check as i won´t waste any more of my time with this circle jerk nonsense that preaches friendship at first and to then give you random lesbian SM sex next. Harem is further a dead waste 99,5% of the time and the deconstructive Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei (9/10) should be the final word on it. A real romance would be Kids on the Slope (10/10) or Mars (10/10) while the satirical Love in Hell (8/10) proves that even ecchi can have it´s place in the world.
The Eisner winning Saga (10/10) by Image actually bother to have explicit man on beast-woman action in-between the gore and social commentary so even mock bestiality can work. So why does this sell again? Oh right the manga started out the exact same time a certain pony show got big on the web and thus filled a void in the marketplace so have fun with the copycats as even the author started a "spin-off". It may be minimally more readable do to less sexism while having better character designs but Okayado is now dead to me and i have my hopes up that a real mangaka will step in at some point to deconstruct the beast girls phenomenon as it grew out of control. Have fun with the unenviable Tenchi ending after 20+ volumes of vapid and unerotic nothing if you care to stick around or read porn by let´s say Tanaka Yutaka instead.

Those familiar with DRRR!! may have already made the connection that this new monster is likely a dullahan, a grim reaper from Irish mythology...

The manga didn't miss any of that when they gave her an Irish accent (of sorts -- how accurate it is, I can't say.)

I don't think anyone has any illusion about what kind of series this is.

I came here expecting a thoughtful, heartwarming drama that used monster girls as a metaphor to explore the difficulties of integrating into a foreign culture. Are you suggesting perhaps there's something more subtle going on?

@residentgrigo

I have only seen bits and pieces of Monster Musume, but in regards to your post. Even if everything you said is true, sometimes that art and humor makes everything worthwhile.

With Masamune Shirow the art is everything.

Appleseed does look nice but all 3 of his GitS manga have rather messy art on every second page... His endless hentai is just Shocked and none of the adaptations of his work ever match his writing too. The Appleseed manga once again stick out on the writing front so that is unfortunate but it is has been on "hiatus" for 25+ years too. Lol and i like GitS for the anime and the SAC/Arise manga.

I read Image´s Sex (Frank Millers Batman in NC-17), Sex Ciminals (it won an Eisner) and hentai by Fuuga as half of his work is interesting. Sex (or gore/rape) will never bother me in theory.
It´s weak writing (where are these so called jokes?), money printing only (all big harem manga are longer then Akira) and out of control sexism that made me write the review but i do nail the girls.
I also wonder to which degree MLP had an influence on the beast women content of the last 3-ish years. They are becoming noticeable. Here is the cover for Saga No.9 which also won an Eisner so "bestialy fantasies" can be good too. (I meant the superior Kids on the Slope manga btw.)

10/10 art, 11/10 writing and good erotic content on top. Look at that hunk... So like that please!

Edit: Saga is incomparable in terms of story but it does beast girls well and bothers to have actually sexual content and good jokes. I also read more then 1 volume of MM when the manga was new or a few months ago.

Okay so it's a guilty pleasure, they summed up what we've already known about harem media, so what else is new? And WTF are we comparing that with SAGA? Which on a total different level of story and art?

No, the real WTF here is that it seems like he's trying to say that the popularity of My Little Pony has somehow had any amount of influence on the popularity of monster girls. I'm still laughing about that.

What the word needs, another review of the genre than the book itself. Worse, it's reactionary to the sales numbers so it's exactly a "Why this title when not [blank]?" review. By the way, you left out the fish/mermaid so you may want to read it and then critique it.

Also, deconstructions ultimately suck; They're good for that one moment but when that moment is gone, the genre resumes like nothing happened.

As for my take on the series and book 6 in particular, I don't like using words like "it's good for what it is" and fortunately, I don't have too as Monster Musume exceeded my expectations. It's more a matter of taking monster and animal archetypes and layering human reasoning and emotion on top of it. A Centaur's Life seems to be more interested in looking at them as human beings but this one keeps them in the realm of fantasy and keeping the view on the relationship between human and monster. They're rational beings who are also monsters.

And it's funny too, can't forget that. It's kind of important and you won't get that just from flipping through a single volume.

As a person who has read pretty much all volumes I can say there is no actual rape in the story.

Well if there was going to be any it would be on the guy because he's a pretty damn passive actor in all this. He's the straight face in the comedy.

And I personally was following this beforehand, and was a fan of the actual porn shorts that showed up. I think we were just short a good harem series at this point that wasn't too heavy on forcing a couple.
