I haven't tried attending Comiket but I did attend the much smaller M3 (http://www.m3net.jp/) event on 26 April 2015 in Tokyo for doujin CD's.

For those that know the anime Higurashi and the theme song, the singer of that song, Eiko Shimamiya, was present at M3 and I had the pleasure of meeting her and getting a CD autographed by her (picture is from her twitter post at https://twitter.com/eikoshimamiya/status/592298635095773184 taken at the event).

The staff and other participants were also quite friendly.

Ah, yes...Comiket can be a fun place to share doujinshi and cosplay, but it can also be a harrowing experience. From the looks of it, Comiket seems to be more of the latter than the former, particularly when there are perverted people lurking around to take pictures of a girl's...you-know-what.

I think the initial season of Comic Party did well showcasing the reality of traversing through Comiket.

When it says don't run afoul of the goons, does that mean don't get in their way or don't take pictures like them?

It looks like there is a small error in the last sentence in the first paragraph. It reads: "Although some of it is specific to Comiket or Japan..." Seems like it should be: "Although some of it is specific to Comiket of Japan..."

Was wondering the same thing. The way it is written sounds like these goons would attack you if you got in their way, or tried to stop them.

I've been and it depends on how hardcore you are. Some of the advice is really good but, despite the crowds it's really organized.

@mo_ri_be notes that high-value notes are discouraged at Comiket, and by the evening con-goers may receive 9,400 yen ($77.50) in coins if they try to buy something with a 10,000-yen note. (Note that in Japan, 500 yen, or $4.12, is a coin.)

This goes for artist alleys everwhere! There always seems to be that early bird (often the very first customer!) that wants to buy a €4 keychain using a €50 note. Get too many of those in a row and odds are you'll burn through your coins and small bills very quickly. This is inconvenient for both customers and vendors. So please, when getting money from an ATM, make sure to get plenty of 10s and 20s, and, if possible, 5s. As a vendor, I thank you Smile

The Men's Room gets crowded, don't think I've ever seen that before.

If I ever saw a line for the Men's Room & not the Ladies I would think I entered the Twilight Zone.

I don't know what sega is smoking.
Joyopolis is 1.5 train stops away from comiket. Not exactly a convenient bathroom alternative.

plenty of cash (50 1,000-yen notes, 100 500-yen coins, and 50 100-yen coins),

I know Japanese are accustomed to carrying more cash than folks from the USA, but wow, ¥105,000 ($855/€766/£551) sure seems like a lot of money for some doujinshi.

The original tweet said not to be "exposed" by them.

No, some things might be specific to Comiket (toilets, vending machines) while other things might be specific to Japan (currency issues).
