Great review. While I personally adore the franchise as a whole, I'm in the boat that the novels are definitely the weakest part (Bell's a much better protagonist, for example, when we're not constantly being hit with his insecurities or single-minded focus on some inane topic, something both the manga and anime manage in a stronger manner) and this novel doesn't do much to change that opinion.
While still good, and a much needed progression of the characters and story, this one does suffer from the same issues that have plagued the novels from the start; such as the somewhat stiff writing, confusing transitions from first person to third person depending on POV, and Bell's single minded focus on a topic.
However, this really does open up the world a lot more and promises a lot of excitement as the story progresses. So, I definitely can't wait until volume 4 launches (and I'm really curious as to how you'll feel about that entire volume being adapted by a single episode in the anime).
