Oh boy! "Sailor Moon" breathing masks. Is it just me or is this a little bit much? I can see the other merchandise but surgery masks with Sailor Moon on them? It's a little over the top if you ask me.

Now only if they'd make a show worth pushing new products for.

Now you too can avoid the perils of the potentially-fatal anime cold!

You probably don't know, but those masks are a common thing in Japan in everyday life. They're for people who have caught a cold or other illness and want to not spread it, people who want to hide their identity, and also, it's a way to keep out incoming illness. Or so they say. It's not like surgeons are buying these at the Mini Stop and going into surgery saying WE NEED TWENTY VOLTS OF MOON POWER STAT!!

I'm in a train right now, and just by looking around in the one car, I can spot three people wearing them.

I just keep picturing that one early SM episode where Rei was down with a cold (no, not Nurse Minako), but was stubborn enough to rejoin the team at the last minute, making her big Sailor Mars entrance in a cold mask.

Actually, they're pretty helpful to wear, especially those cute ones, especially if you're sick. I've worn them on occasion because of allergies, and it helped.

Besides! Beauty blogger, Zawachin actually has her own line face mask, which actually feels similar to this, honestly, and she was pretty popular in 2013-2014. So, I'm not really surprised Sailor Moon would jump on this.

More Japanese youth wearing surgical masks to hide their face, poll:

  • 1. They’re not wearing any makeup and want to hide their face
    2. To keep their face warm
    3. To make their face look small
    4. It comforts them
    5. To keep their throat from drying while sleeping

According to info-gathering site Naver Matome, some women see the mask as not only a way to cover up their face on a bad makeup day, but also as an accessory that can make them more attractive.

“It gives you a mysterious appearance since only your eyes are showing,” says one high-school girl. “Wearing a mask makes me look cuter!”

Other testimonies by those who say they wear masks for the comfort it provides suggest that there is something psychologically deeper than self-image issues as work.

“I don’t want to show others my true self,” “Since my face is covered, people don’t know how I’m really feeling. It’s comforting,” and “I don’t like having to create facial expressions for people” are some of the reasons given by Japanese high school students who mask up regardless of the season.

Do you think those white face masks that are so popular in Japan are effective in combating allergies or the flu?

I have bad allergies, so I like to get the masks from Kaiser when I go, but I would totally buy SMC ones. ;u;

The new round of merch is looking fab, and I can't wait for more.
I hope there will be news on the anime soon. Maybe once the DVD of UNV is out. ♥

Speaking of UNV, I really hope the DVD has the graduation stuff, because it sucks that it was left out of the stream. :/
