Hmm, does this imply that the anime will actually go on past the initial 4 slated episodes?

It was already announced that there would be a 5th episode. The way the Military Uniform and Equipment Designer talked in the interview I read there just going to keep making episodes until their done with the entire manga.

I just preordered the 4th volume from Rightstuf. It's going to be a long wait.
