Considering Junko's works are largely of the yaoi/boy's love genre; I think Kiss Him is also her way of parodying some of those genre cliches via Kae, just like how Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki kun was a parody of shoujo cliches.

I found the fat voice to be part of the show's goofy charm. I thought it really fit with how the whole overnight weight loss was treated like a joke.
That said, I think not trying to mirror the tone of the Japanese VA line by line may have been smart. I don't watch many dubs, but it often feels odd when I hear those drastic shifts in English.
