Oh, good. They did end up redesigning him slightly, to avoid the Black Face connotations with the original design.
This is what he looked like back in September 2017:
I'm guessing someone at the studio or their International partners must've raised concerns about it, for understandable reasons.

Yeah because racial caricatures of black people only exist in the United States. It's not like ones like Zwarte Piet still exist.

Japan has a history of using black face that should be as avoided as the United States' use of it.
