I enjoyed this film quite a lot, for many of the same reasons the reviewer did. I've seen the Deen FSN anime, F/Z, and most of UBW, and Sakura always felt like a pretty odd member of the cast, like the stereotypical perfect, domestically inclined girl that a harem protagonist has a crush on at the beginning of the story (Onodera from Nisekoi, that one girl from To Love-Ru, etc.). I'm glad this film explores her character in a lot more depth, and the direction is amazing; there is so much that is told to the audience about the characters, their motivations, and their feelings, without needing to use words.

I admit that the recent interview where Nasu describes Sakura as a "piece of meat" always weighs on my mind when it comes to these films, but so far i'm very happy with Ufotable's work. Can't wait to see the second film in March

I'm surprised that I watched this first movie a handful of times already with future itches to keep revisiting it, especially with anticipation of the second. I keep finding myself not minding how it skims through the opening chapters and really appreciating it for what it is. It can only get that much better with the 2nd and 3rd parts.

Out of curiosity, with the English cast interview video has it played out of synch with the audio for everyone else, or is it just my copy?

I don't recall having any sync issues with my copy.

No problems with sync-must be your player. This is a seriously beautiful film, especially compared to some of the other Fate shit that has been coming out in the last few years.

I fell asleep while watching the movie in theater.

Packaging and extra look gorgeous. If I was Fate/Stay night fan, I would shell out my money for the limited edition.

Were you on a date or something? If I still disliked Fate I’d stay miles and miles away from HF...

Unless I heard wrong I think the dub dialogue used "Serra" instead of Sella which is a bit annoying... Literally credited as Sella and Unlimited Blade Works' dub spoke her name as Sella.

I see the ADR Script writer changed or it was a clumsy production error which is disappointing if that's what happened.

Wow, I already knew that Nasu is far from the most progressive or sensitive of writers but to be that causal.... No wonder I like his universe best when it's filtered through other people's visions. I truly do hope that Ufotable can keep uplifting the material for the Fate: HF films until they reach the end as it has been surprisingly well done and engaging after the deeply disappointing Unlimited Blade Works route TV series.

The actual (translated) quote is "neat meat" and the context is how he and Takeuchi referred to her visual appearance while making a pornographic game 15 years ago.
Whether it's an appropriate way for the creator to call a (fictional) rape victim he's writing disturbing sex scenes about is of course your own judgement.

some too-squeaky female dub voices

Haha I assume this refers to Stephanie Sheh's Illyasviel? I think it definitely takes a bit of getting used too, but I thought she captures the evil little girl spirit of the character well!
I'm surprised that knocked the dub down a whole rating, especially given much deeper female voices like Kari Walhgren's, or even Cristina Vee's take on Sakura.

Laughing Yes, dub Illiya was part of my issue, but I'm actually not a huge fan of dub Sakura and Rin either - I felt like the English VAs were (being directed to) try(ing) too hard to match the original voices. (And that was a tortured sentence if ever I've written one!)

I definitely take issue with Nasu's past words about Sakura. What he as a writer puts her through is one thing (and sometimes you do have to torture your characters for the plot), but I also think that authors need to respect, if not understand, their characters in order to best write them. I don't necessarily see that from him, which is troubling, if only from a craft/creative standpoint.

An idea that the author doesn't understand his character seems nonsensical unless it is based on a real person. The question is rather about whether the author gives the proper respect, not to the character itself since it's just a bunch of letters and colors, but its circumstances in the context of our contemporary social sensibilities.
That can best be answered not by misquoting random interviews out of context, but by seeing how the character is used within the work itself. And that has been a matter of controversy (in the original PC version of the novel, not that much in the 'cleaned-up' Realta Nua version) since forever.

Oh wow I’m surprised to hear that! I absolutely adored Cristina Vee’s take on Sakura, probably even more than the original Japanese. She imbues the character with such a sincere sense of sorrow and vulnerability, without being overt about it. I found her performance very endearing honestly.
And interesting you feel they were being directed to match the Japanese, because I feel like Mela Lee’s version of Rin is like night and day compared to Kana Ueda’s. In fact the voice is pretty close to her normal speaking voice I believe? I like both versions equally (though I do recognize how iconic Kana Ueda is as the character), but Tony Oliver the director has always said that he directs the actors to be as “real and natural” as possible in Fate works, and I do believe that reflects on Mela Lee’s voice and performance as Rin. It sounds distinct on its own.

Crispin Freeman’s interview where he talks about how he approaches voicing Kirei is fantastic by the way.

Agreed, that was my favorite interview. Smile

It's funny, I normally like all of those English VAs (especially Christina Vee) and I'm not particularly attached to the Japanese voices. There was just something that didn't match up for me - perhaps a breathy quality that I interpreted as "squeaky." It just set my teeth on edge, and that's not normally the case with any of those actresses.
