Dark Horse first released the first compiled book volume of the series in English in 1997.

I'm pretty sure I bought the first volume of What's Michael? in English somewhere around 1991-92 as a birthday present for my mother – she's a cat fanatic. I don't know if the publisher was Dark Horse, though. It could have been an English translation from Kodansha, meant for japanese readers who want to learn English.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
The hype is real on this one! This is THE best cat manga I have ever read (and me and a friend did a whole panel on cat manga, this was the only one we ranked as full 5/5 for catness). I really hope this manga finally gets the love it deserves this time around and isn't overlooked in a pretty saturated market.

Honestly? I'll be double dipping on this one. It's worth it! I also hope they keep the old translation, by Dana Lewis and the late great Toren Smith (there were a few typos regarding cat behavior, "Flehmen's Response" was definitely translated literally, but that'd be one of the only changes I'd make).

@Swissman
Eclipse comics published a few volumes as well (but with a different page count to Dark Horse's, so you couldn't even mix and match properly). And they did publish them around 1990, so that was probably the version you picked up a copy of.

I never read this manga before but after having enjoyed My Roommate is a Cat earlier this year, I definitely have to check out more cat anime and manga.

I still have all my old volumes of What's Michael that I bought as a child in the 90s. I really hope we'll finally get to read this in right to left format. This is great news and I hope we get the whole manga released in English.

The now-defunct publisher Eclipse published two collections around that time. I think they may have been localized by the (sadly) late writer Toren Smith. I remember having the first volume, but I first started reading them when they were used as Japanese-language teaching tools in the old Mangajin magazine.

Being a cat lover they never failed to get a chuckle from me! Very happy to see this collection coming out!

I'll be buying this as soon as it comes out.

And while we're re-releasing Kobayashi mangas, could we could get one for Club 9? I managed to find a used volume for pretty cheap and really enjoyed it. I've been wanting to read more but it's hard to find the volumes for a good price. And to make matters even more complicated, Dark Horse only released 3 out of 5 volumes. The last two volumes worth of chapters did get a release in Super Manga Blast magazine, but trying to hunt down each individual issue would take forever.
