I think the real question is why they're doing this for the X series and not, y'know, Battle Network. Imagine having a Navi on your phone! Hell, the original series already had a gacha mechanic, so it wouldn't be that hard to adapt.
I love X more, don't get me wrong, but this seems like as bad an idea as that Castlevania game that ended service a couple weeks ago. Also, PvP in mobile games needs to be done really carefully or the "core" players will just break it, alienating anyone who tries to jump in casually.

I play the Asian version of this, and while I was very skeptical as well, I've had a lot of fun with it.
The touch controls are functionable, unlike that X1 port for iOS, but the game has controller support, so it ends up feeling like a Megaman X game.
There's been plenty of bugs and PvP/Co-op connection issues, but hopefully with the Japanese release going live, QA will be tighter.
