Season 01: Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (TV) Season 02: Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (TV 2) Source: Manga (completed @ 17 volumes by Asato Mizu) Demographic: Shounen Animation Studio: Felix Film Genres: comedy, romance Themes: school Plot Summary: Short, quiet Reina Aharen sits next to Raidō in class. Aharen is not so good at gauging the distance between people (or personal boundaries), and Raidō initially sensed some distance between the two of them. Then one day, when Raidō picked up the eraser that Aharen had dropped, the distance between them suddenly became uncomfortably close. From "way too distant" to "way too close," Aharen is simply unpredictable. Air Date & Platform: Season 01: April 01, 2022 (Friday) Available on: Crunchyroll Season 02: April 07, 2025 (Monday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: Season 01: 12 episodes Season 02: 12 episodes Total: 24 episodes [EDIT: Fancy opener stuff added. -TK] |

Episode 1
I don't know, the comedy really clicked with me in this first episode. It is admittedly cute, but I think that the absurdist elements were even better, such as when she was pushing he face into the claw machine window, or a bento it his face. Also, not to get too psychoanalysis for real world diagnosis, but Aharen's poor skill was making me think a bit of autism. Not understanding boundaries. |

Episode 4
That's right, fidget spinners in anime. And in the same episode we got rap battles for communication. I totally dig the aesthetic of this anime and its comedy. At the end happening to leave on a dog mount, like Chiyo-chan. Also, on my earlier thoughts of Aharen with autism, it pushed me even further when she cam hooked on the fidget spinner, since they were designed in mind to help autistic people. |

This was honestly one of the shows I dreaded the most ending, it just really hit me as a show I enjoyed. Two main characters that likely appear neurodivergent, a comedy with romance that made them both interesting. Perhaps not everyone will say it, but to me it was often actually laugh out loud funny, having really good punchlines. Something quick, I also liked that it didn't look like it make it being a mean joke against Aharen's 'brother' Ren liking to wear female clothing, although I might have liked to have seen more of him. If we are talking about queerness, while we are at it an also mention to Miyahira Sensei, who was likely attracted to Tobaru sensei, when she was accidentally hitting on her. Not big things. Also a bit hard not to read things into Oshiro, who apparently was avoiding being too close to Aharen because her heart would beat from being close. But talking about love, Raido and Aharen confessed their feelings and became a couple. Aharen apparently planned to confess, but Raido took the initiative Reina could only respond by kissing him, and she thought that she messed up in whatever is considered normal to respond. Her complex in not being good at reading things like normal social cues, can totally relate. My rating will be Excellent (9/10), which I admit is probably a total me thing. I think most other people would just moan in seeing fidget spinners suddenly show up, while I find the dated element to actually add to the humour. We also had rap battle communication, igloo cafes, and beyblades. |

I 100 percent agree with your assessment and opinion of the series. I had the biggest smile on my face when Aharen and Raido officially became a couple. I'm definitely going to miss those two, but I have a feeling that we'll see them again!

I enjoyed this show as well. Raido's constant jumping to wild conclusions about Aharen-san while having the same vacant look on his face that he normally has never failed to crack me up. I liked Nose Bleed Sensei too who also tended to jump to "esteem" conclusions but at least with Raido and Aharen-san she wasn't wildly off base. I hope we get another chance to get too close with Aharen-san (and the others) again.

And so Aharen returns. The first episode was good in that it had more of the ever delusional Reido and the very talented Aharen. The teacher is also back and didn't manage to last an episode without bleeding out. A welcome surprise is new character Tamanaha and there was even a bit of character progression due to her introduction (or rather meeting up again).
Seems like another fun season and golly has it really been three years already? |

Season 2 - Episode 1
Either the source material is higher quality in this arc or the adaptation team has stepped up their game, since this was a much more enjoyable watch than I recall Season 1 being (not that I disliked Season 1, but did not go gaga over it either). |

Good to have this back. I had forgotten about Sensei Esteem, but her resting bitch face combined with her inner passion always cracks me up. I just hope she has several blood bags at the ready to top up her inevitable sanguine depletion. New girl is a welcome addition. I also forgot about the girl who used to pop up in unexpected places. Looks like once again this show will be a welcome supply of chuckles and cuteness.

Yah, I put this one off for a day because I was watching so many new anime on Monday, but it still seems to have retained its quirkiness and charm with nary a misstep. It's cool to see a show handling the transition from not dating to dating so gracefully.
The teacher with her slightly off way of using the word "esteem" kind of reminds of another long haired, glass wearing brunette apt to go into passionate throes of near ecstasy while misusing the word "Guilty!" And I was just thinking that I was going to miss Oshiro hiding in cabinets and ceiling tiles and vents when one of the other characters said it. I thought the hyper-sensitive gyaru was an interesting choice. Good stuff. |

The second episode sure was a great one. The first half containing Animal Crossing, Yakuza and Cyberpunk had me rolling. That goes especially for the Animal Crossing part in that Tom Nook does indeed rip you off in those games and unlike Raido you can do nothing about it. Also kudos to Raido for riding on the iconic bike. The second half was fun in that it showcased just how far Raido can warp himself by having such an active imagination (though it was a bit much for Aharen).

I've never played this Animal Crossing game you speak of, but it looks similar to something my niece used to play on Nintendo. Apparently playing it's not a necessary experience in order to get a kick out of the episode since I didn't and I did, in that order.
I also don't know what anime was being mocked when Raido became Mr. Assertive. IT reminded me of 100% Unrequited Love. the parody anime in Teasing Master Tagagi-San. This is a very different show from I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years, but it's similar in that it hasn't lost an ounce of its original charm after being gone for a couple of years IMHO. I liked that Raido's sister has the same wild imagination that he does though she seems to have a better handle on it. |
