Perhaps there's No Need For Advice (har har), but I have long loved the Tenchi series that was first shown on CN. Turns out that was the first two OVAs, apparently, and maybe Night Before the Carnival was a standalone episode (I'm still confused on that).
Anyway, I love that part of the story, whatever the heck it is. Tenchi Universe I liked less, and Tenchi in Tokyo still less, but I was less tolerant of "sappy romance stuff" when I was a budding anime fan than I am now (I recently bought Ah! My Goddess vols. 1 + 2 and managed to not retch at the sweetness, but I am still debating how much of it I can take).
Basically, though, I love Tenchi when it's a comedy, and I love it when it's serious and sci-fi. The "girls pining for Tenchi" part is best relegated to the background in my opinion.
With that in mind, would I enjoy the movies? The ratings in the Encyc. seem pretty good. And what about all that Pretty Sammy stuff? I normally wouldn't touch maho-shoujo stuff with a 10-foot pole, but I do find Sasami pretty adorable and I have a sense of humor.
(I said that maybe there's No Need For Advice because maybe you guys simply can't tell me what I'll like. It's just that the only way I will see this stuff is probably buying it, so I'm trying to get a feel for it first.)

Well since you didn't like the romance parts, Tenchi Forever is out. Tenchi Forever basically focused on Tenchi's relationship with Haruna. And the feelings Ryoko and Ayeka felt for him when he was no longer there. This movie hardly had any action, but I enjoyed it for it attempting to create a serious story within the Tenchi series.
Daughter of Darkness, or Midnight summer's eve and Tenchi in Love 1, should be more of your liking. It did not focus too much on the attempts of romance, but more on the sci-fi and comedy aspects of the show.

Okay, that's helpful. I can see Daughter of Darkness and Tenchi in Love in the Encyc, but what is Midnight Summer's Eve? Another movie?

That was the Japanese title for the second film. And by the way, I would recommend the first Tenchi film over the second. Daughter of Darkness has its moments, but the amount of comedy in it made it a little too goofy for me. The first film manages to strike a much nicer combo between the action and comedy (plus a poignant backstory).

The Pretty Sammy OVA's are actually one big comedic rip off of the magical girl genre. If you want to laugh even more, turn on the dub track.
