After War Gundam X (TV) Very good Highly enjoyable, it's a shame this got canceled (in the true spirit of a gundam series), and an even bigger one this never got licensed. Gundam X is my favorite AU series.
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Good This was a pretty cool compilation of short stories. I saw it with a friend when it came out and "The Matrix" was still a fresh topic. Looking back, it's not anything special, but it doesn't suck either. Anyhow, it merits a viewing from any "matrix-head".
Birdy the Mighty (OAV) Good Another gem from the OVA days. Birdy's got a good story, pretty good animation considering it came in '96. The dub was not flawless, but above a lot of the other series of the times. Everybody should give this title a try.
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) Good It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I remember this being pretty good. I enjoyed watching this one.
Chobits (TV) Excellent Chobits kept me captivated throughout the series. Hideki's constant yelling was a little annoying but mostly kept me laughing. Chobits did a good job of combining comedy, drama, and romance while exploring the topic of morals of future technology.
Chrono Crusade (TV) Good
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Masterpiece
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Very good really great
Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly (movie 11) Decent Saw when I was younger, looking back, nothing too great, but not bad either. It is good for the younger audiences who don't anaylze anime very much (like I currently do).
Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge (movie 5) Decent Saw when I was younger, looking back, nothing too great, but not bad either. It is good for the younger audiences who don't anaylze anime very much (like I currently do).
Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug (movie 4) Decent Saw when I was younger, looking back, nothing too great, but not bad either. It is good for the younger audiences who don't anaylze anime very much (like I currently do).
Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (movie 3) Decent Saw when I was younger, looking back, nothing too great, but not bad either. It is good for the younger audiences who don't anaylze anime very much (like I currently do).
Elfen Lied (TV) Masterpiece I'm gonna start of by saying this show was very captivating and very fresh. From start to finish I was very engrossed in the story. It was beautifully woven, deeply motivating, and had gorgeous visuals. What more could you ask for? After watching this you begin to see how the "monsters" are actually quite human, but it is the "humans" who are monsters. Everybody needs to watch Elfen Lied.
Eureka Seven (TV) Masterpiece (dub & sub) One of the most powerful and touching series I've ever seen. Easily ranks in the top 5 of all time anime for me. I can't think of anything I didn't like about this one.
FLCL (OAV) Excellent
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) Good Fruits Basket had a good engaging story with great characters, but it's downfall was the way Tohru just "magically" makes everything better. The show left off at a bad place as well. Did not live up to the hype.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Good I thorughly enjoyed the visuals and the story
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Decent Not as well executed as its predecessor. The movie was hindered by bad dialogue that included some philosopihcal quote every two minutes as well and poor execution of CGI effects such as people moving incredibly slow when walking and overall stiffness of charaters and enviroment.
Good Morning Althea (OAV) So-so
(The) Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor (OAV) Good This was one of my first anime's if not my first, looking over it now, the bad guys are pretty cheesy, but damn those Guyver suits are the shit. The story was good, but had more potential, but don't they all? I'd recommend this to anyone looking for unique action series.
INTERSTELLA 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (movie) Excellent Very awesome, I've never been so moved by a musical ever. Perhaps because I love Daft Punk and Anime a LOT. Very underground title, but I'd advocate it to anybody.
Kino's Journey (TV) Very good An interesting look at social customs and what people "really are". It did get a bit pretentious with the floating quotes though.
Like the Clouds, Like the Wind (movie) Decent It was a fun romp with Chinese culture
Love Hina (TV) Decent Good animation, but the plot suffered, very little character development, highly repetitive. Didn't live up to the hype, poor writing, and boring.
Love Hina Again (OAV) So-so Good animation, but the plot suffered, very little character development, highly repetitive. Didn't live up to the hype, poor writing, and boring.
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (OAV) Good I was laughing my way through most of this. Not bad for a comedy based spinoff.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Very good Very wacky, and interesting. It's got believable characters in a somewhat unbelievable setting which is great. Full of wacky situations and what ifs, this is a good watch.
Mobile Suit Gundam (TV)
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (TV) So-so
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 (OAV) Very good An awesome way to continue and end the IGLOO series, it left me begging for more but very satisfied with what I got. Stunning 3D CGI
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War (movies) Good I loved how IGLOO dipped in and showed various parts of the war, giving events and people cameos. The viewpoint of a weapons tester who realizes he cannot do anything in a changing war is very original. Stunning 3D CGI work
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) Excellent
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) Very good A good solid representative of what the Gundam series can be. The designs in this series are pretty cool, I thought the story was pretty good.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) Good
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV) Very good This Gundam show had a compelling story, it was enjoyable to watch, not overly complex, but not too simple either.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV) Masterpiece
Mushi-Shi (TV) Masterpiece Pure and utter win.
My Pico (OAV) Bad avoid
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Very good Another gem from Ghibili.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Excellent (dub & sub) It's got a great start but quickly degenerates into a monster of the week format. I didn't like how EVA 01 hogged all the action, there wasn't enough balance with the other mechs for my tatstes. What's the sense of having the other ones if they're rarely used? Once it hits the halfway point it really picks up though, only to drop off into a spiraling mass of confusion for the last 4 episodes. I didn't care for the way a lot of things were left unexplained, but I suppose that's why the movies were made.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Good Death sucked, Rebirth didn't. Nuff said.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Excellent It was worth it to watch these two "alternate episodes" to see what was supoosed to happen / elaborate on what did happen. Still mindblowing as ever.
Ninja Scroll (movie) Good This one was ok, but I don't think it lived up to the hype.
Outlanders (OAV) Decent Back in the day, this was one of the only things available to watch. I wouldn't have watched it otherwise.
Outlaw Star (TV) Excellent A solid sci-fi/action, has a great story, good characters, and cool spaceships. This is a must see for fans of the genre.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Excellent Another gem from Miyazaki, a great matching of themes to visuals
Record of Lodoss War (OAV) Decent Dragged until the 4th or 5th episode but the story was not bad once it got going, good character design, but poorly animated, the whole D&D theme was a downside.
Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent An amazingly well blended mix of hip-hop style and Japanese ideas, everyone should see this series. The only reason it doesn't garner a masterpiece is it doesn't seem like anyone knows what they're doing till halfway through the story. Other than that this show rocks.
Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture (special) So-so Only truly appealing unless you are young or liked the video game.
Spirited Away (movie) Good I had high expectations when I started this movie. After I finished I felt kind of dissapointed. The art, dialogue, and music are all great, but even at 2 hours I don't think enough of the story was presented. There were a lot of things I noticed after it was over, so I'd say this movie should be viewed at least twice to properly comprehend, or maybe I'm just dense :)
Spriggan (movie) Very good
Starship Operators (TV) Very good For an endeavor from a relatively unknown studio, this is pretty good. They were able to blend the 2D and 3D elements rather well and I felt connected to the story for the most part. Shure there was some technical issues I noticed (like no need for banking turns in space) and the fact a bunch of rookies are going around blowing up veterans, or that some of the people look too similar. But those things aside, this is a sold title.
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie Decent Had a friend give this to me, not bad if you like the game, but I wouldn't buy it on my own.
Temptation (OAV) So-so Good for what it was.
Tenchi in Tokyo (TV) Not really good When I saw this I wondered what went wrong. The art style was way off of the normal style, the characters personalities were watered down, the same core Tenchi plot was there, but it wasn't enough to save this series. Only recommended for the extreme fan.
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992) Masterpiece (dub & sub) Only a few anime have been able to draw me in so much, and this is one of them. It's got comedy, romance, action, sci-fi, and drama all blended together well. It's got a great flow to the story, and the characters aren't average stereotypes they all have their quirks and talents. One of my favorite anime of all time. I'd recommend this to anyone.
Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special Good This wasn't meant to be anything other than a short story to keep people interested in the Tenchi story, and in that respect, it did it's job.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki (OAV 3/2003) Very good (dub & sub) Great art, good music, but too bad some of the original Tenchi flavor has been lost in this new installment in the saga. They seem to patter around in the first half of each volume, but the second halves of each volume is where the material is at. It was good to see an ending to the Tenchi OVA, even if it did have flaws.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994) Masterpiece (dub & sub) Only a few anime have been able to draw me in so much, and this is one of them. It's got comedy, romance, action, sci-fi, and drama all blended together well. It's got a great flow to the story, and the characters aren't average stereotypes they all have their quirks and talents. One of my favorite anime of all time. I'd recommend this to anyone.
Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival (OAV) Masterpiece (dub & sub) Just like the rest of the OAV's, this one is a classic.
Tenchi The Movie 2 - The Daughter of Darkness Good It's well established this is a short movie, but I think they did a good job of filling the time in. You get to see a different aspect of life in the Tenchi world, some quality animation, and a good story. It did seem kind of rushed, but it was well worth my time.
Tenchi Universe (TV) Excellent A different story than the OVA's, but it does retain most of the same character backgrounds. Universe seemed a bit lighter compared to the OVA series, but was able to achieve the same chemistry, to series is one of my favorites. I'd recommend to anyone.
Trigun (TV) Good It was alright and I liked it, but I wish it wasn't so rushed at the end
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) Good Picked this up at the local Blockbuster, I'm normally not into vampires, but I really got into this one for not being a strong fan of vampire stuff. This one was well worth my time.
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Masterpiece Escaflowne is amazing. After watching the first episode, it was all over. I just couldn't wait to watch the next episode! (good thing I bought the DVD"s so I could marathon it). This is one of the few titles that has been able to keep me completely glued to the screen and so engrossed in the story. Great art, great story, great music, great everything. Escaflowne belongs in everybodies anime collection.
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Excellent Check it out if your bored
X (TV) Decent Interesting premise, but a poor execution. I got really bored watching the same 2 or 3 "dream" scenes a million times each episode. Story really picked up at vol 6 though.
X OAV Decent Utterly out of context if viewed before the TV series. Viewed after, it simply provides a little bonus for fans to squeal at, nothing great here.
