Takashi Yamazaki's movie of this was fantastic; wonderful script, good effects, charming characters. Nice to hear the source material is continuing.

This was a series I was curious about when I was in Japan a while ago, and I'm only now finding out that it actually got ebook English releases a few years back... for the first two volumes (out of thirty-something). Wonder if it's worth looking into.

I can only speak to the film, but it has a charming premise...sometime around 1960 (I'm guessing, based on fashion and cars), an author moves back to his ancestral home of Kamakura, bringing with him a blushing new bride. She's all excited about starting a new life with him, but once they get settled in, she's shocked to find that there are ghosts, yokai, and gods walking around all over the place, and nobody thinks anything of it; in this ancient city, the supernatural just happens to be an everyday fact of life.
The "Always: Sunset on Third Avenue" films, while not supernatural, are inspired by manga by the same author. If you like low-key stories about people in past decades living their lives, pulling together in hard times, and generally being kind to one another, you'll probably enjoy Ryohei Saigan's works. |
