I have some mixed feelings about the first episode. On the positive side there is the mc being unique in that his previous world was not at all kind to him and he is very much a cold/ruthless product of that. The ending in which he showed some real emotion for the first time was pretty effective. The setting while not at all unique is interesting enough and I wonder what the former king will want to do with his new life and how op he will get.
On the other hand is the animation that is not at all impressive with a lot of still shots. It is also not the most exciting start but Arthur is a baby currently so that might be unfair to say. And finally: the setting is interesting enough, but it is another one of those with no real unique hook right now besides the mc's former life. |

I agree, in the first ten minutes it was hard to miss all those blank backgrounds, still frames, and cheese shots where crappy special effects were supposed to take the place of motion. That calmed down once Kingsly Poopington the Second was reborn into a new world, but that was the first impression, y'know?
And I also thought the anime was alright if nothing special. My favorite moment was when Buddha Baby was just floating there in the ruins of their house. My second favorite moment was when he cried like a...well...baby...when he finally let a little bit of love shine in. <--I keep getting the feeling I just quoted a Brady Bunch song or something. I imagine the pitch was something like, "Imagine Mushoku Tensei with a badass instead of a a creepy perv #$%@wit for a main character." And the first response was probably a blank stare and a "You know we're not Studio Bind, right?" Good enough to give 3 episodes in any case. |

Episode 1
I am not sold on this but I'll give it some more runway. I just don't like reincarnation premises where an adult is in a baby's body. Thank God we didn't have to put up an adult male voice hur-hur-hurring over the prospect of sucking on his momma's titties like some other piece of shit show I could mention, but it still isn't a plot point I dig. I found the episode boring and there wasn't any kind of vibe that made me think it was something I'll enjoy over the long haul. But like I say, I'll give it some more sampling. |

The anime didn't do anything wrong (aside from putting its maimed foot forward in terms of the animation in the intro), but it felt like I'd seen it before and it didn't feel like it was doing anything unexpected or had a life of its own. Like drinking soda that's gone flat.
Just being a safe Mushoku Tensei isn't enough. I think the problem is that I always give mid level fantasy anime a chance because I like the genre, but I've seen so many of them at this point that the ones that are just looking to go through the motions with paint by numbers plots turn me into a ref with a checklist. But I'm not just keeping track of goals, I'm checking off violations, and if there are enough common cliches that annoy me without enough redeeming qualities to balance them out, I'm gone. Adult in kid's body, -10. OP in the first ten minutes with no effort? -10. Solves all problems easily with no brains, no suspense, and all power cheat? -10 Instant adoring harem, just add water? -10 Slaves? -10. Sibling with no boundaries - 10. Everyone but the MC and female lead is an over the top sociopath? Okay, I'm out of here. The ones I've stuck with in the last few years - Chillin in my 30's, My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S Rank, Farming Life in Another World, The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Campfire Cooking, Ubel Blatt...I didn't think they were all high quality winners or anything, and I understand if people passed on them. But they didn't feel like cookie cut patterns to me. With this one, I liked the two moments I talked about, and I liked the parents, so I'm willing to give it some time to break out and claim some territory of its own. |

Weirdly enough the second episode was a bit better in the animation department. Better effects, better movement and less still shots. A strange choice given that many people decide whether to watch more or not based on the premiere.
Story wise the second episode was quite busy. The family packed up and left so that OP Art can have a proper teacher and they were accompanied by the party the parent used to belong to. What followed was fantasy world being a not nice place. I do question those bandits though, they seem to be the same as lemmings when it comes to self preservation. The mother being pregnant was no big surprise given the opening. As for the creature at the end, she may be friendly? |

I'm glad I didn't ditch this at episode 1, because I also think episode 2 was a distinct improvement.
I still think this show is basically the result of someone watching and/or reading Mushoku Tensei and going "Cool story, but I'd kind of like to envision it without having a scumweasel front and center." And then having the not exactly original story picked up by a studio that wasn't Bind. But y'know, I'm okay with that. I like the family, and I like the former party. I do agree that the bandits weren't exactly master strategists. "Let's see...we've got them in a narrow gorge, surrounding them on both sides with higher elevation...I know! Let's announce ourselves first, then charge down to ground level en masse and attack them from close quarters!" And even if the animation was an improvement over episode 1's intro, it wasn't exactly Demon Slayer material. But all that said, I had a good time. P.S. Good or bad, I'm thinking the monster has a non-stomping agenda at the very least. |

I don't have a lot to say, other than I think the upward trend is still continuing. I liked 2 better than 1, and 3 better than 2.

Took me way too long to get reoriented at the start of the episode, wondering where he was and how he got there. Finally I remembered how the previous episode ended, and it was all good from there. I'm sad about Sylvia though. She was nice. Wondering if she was responsible for bringing him to this world, since she seemed to know his whole deal. Also why the other dragon was gunning for her, but didn't seem to want her dead. Is he permanently gone now?
I liked her almost shy admission that she could've sent him back sooner but she just didn't want to. |

I didn't get the conversation between Sylvia and the other female voice that was not Sylvia in that land of fog and vagueness at all, except to understand that someone else will keep poking up in the narrative here and there.
I did wonder if reincarnating the MC with memories intact was a cosmic law defying act that reduced Sylvia to her wounded state. She and the other whatever they are (unicorn-dragon-fairy?) indicated that using their powers was connected to their life energy somehow or other. |

The ultimate ''don't judge a book by its cover'' episode and while only a single episode it does seem like it will have a large influence on the rest of the season. I doubt that it will be easy for Arthur to find his family somehow, it is probably going to be an ordeal.

Make that an extensive ordeal given how the elves reacted at the end of episode four.

I almost didn't watch episode 5 because this anime has been hanging right there in the border zone between "It's okay" and "I Don't Care."
But I just watched it, and if episode 4 was tilting toward "I Don't Care" this one was leaning back toward "It's Okay." Mostly because I thought Gramps was interesting. |

Not sure what to make of what Arty thought he saw in Tessia's expression that set him off so. We even revisited it a couple times, and it just looked to me like she was upset that they were all about killing him instead of welcoming her back with open arms. Like chagrined that she didn't take priority.
Then it was just funny. Soldiers: "Kill him now!" Tessia: "No, he saved me, he's not bad, don't kill him." Soldiers: "He brainwashed her! Kill him now!" Tessia: "He's a good human!" Grandpa: "Release him now!" Parents: "Why aren't you killing him now?" Grandpa: "Cause I just told them not to." Arthur: "Is this really okay" x5 Arthur: "Glad you believe me. I have a question for you Milord." Papa Elf: "What is it?" Arthur: "What the hell are you wearing on your head?" I also want to know how they get up into those tree houses. Anyway, as mediocre and odd (like, what's with all the random Dutch angles?) as this production is, I'm liking it about as well as anything this season. Even when the dialog is clumsy and repetitive, it's entertaining. |

Episode 6 was a refreshing one. Art's parents finally got the news that he is still alive which made for quite the emotional moment. Also refreshing was seeing another race other than humanity be racist for a change. It makes sense given the circumstances but it meant for Art to deal with some cold looks and rude comments. That one kid who got punched will likely return for more at some point.
I am still liking the show, the comments I see about it on other sites are less than positive and I would not call it a masterpiece by a long shot but it is a solid enough isekai. |
