Fate/View Order is still unclear and could use a formal cited source for clarification

Hello ANN,

This post is concerning the recent article made by Kevin Cormack.

Quote:
What should I watch first?: Entire dissertations could be written discussing the arguments for starting with several different options, but I'll cover them in the order that makes the most sense, which other fans are most welcome to noisily disagree with in the comments.

Question: Is this article the best journalistic effort that the singular anime news outlet can offer? I'm merely a fan who has ended up in too-many online debates, and even I came up with two primary sources that could have been integrated into this article's deliberation.

The first primary source is Gen Urobuchi, the author of the original Fate/Zero light novels and the second is Ei Aoki, director of Fate/Zero. The major problem here is the two sources appear to contradict each other in their intended "experience order" of the two major Fate works for new fans. The first time evidently was in the first Fate/Zero volume where Urobuchi delayed releasing Fate/Zero's light novels in Japan so new fans towards could read Fate/Stay Night first if they have not done so. Seen below:

Quote:

Afterwards, we discussed it over and over. After a few continuous meet-ups, the draft of volume one was finally completely in the winter of 2004.
Some readers might be surprised that at the time, Hollow was obviously not finished, so why was volume one concluded!?
(Because we were too busy at that time. In 2005 we also began to do a lot of new commercialisation. Afterwards, as we sorted out all the personnel the company got back on track again.)
Because of that, Urobuchi-san thought ‘Zero is a story based on Fate. So it’s better if Zero doesn’t become available to the public before Fate is released.’ Therefore, after waiting for a year, it was finally released in the winter of 2006. That’s how things went.
The above is Urobuchi-san and Zero’s initial encounter.

Gen Urobuchi repeats this assertion a second time in an interview promoting the release of The Case Files of Lord El Melloi-II for a website called Natalie.Mu:

Quote:
Urobuchi: Even at the time of "Fate/Zero", I thought that it was a story that I could not understand unless I played "Fate / stay night", but unexpectedly there are people who knew "Fate" from "Fate / Zero". However, it was a story that I played with "Fate / stay night", so there were many expressions that I could not understand unless I read it on the premise of it. For a while, I refused to publish anything other than Type-Moon Books.

In contrast to this is director Ei Aoki, who expressed that he adores that new fans were able to experience his Fate/Zero adaptation. The insinuation that I draw from the respective interviews is I think that Gen Urobuchi is offering his opinion on just his light novels, NOT Ufotable's adaptation. The rationale for this claim is that Gen Urobuchi specifically distanced himself from the Studio Ufotable adaptation, cited below.

Quote:
Gen Urobuchi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Phantom - The Animation, Blassreiter) stated on his Twitter account on Sunday that he is not writing the scripts for the upcoming Fate/Zero television anime series.

Quote:
--Did you direct it with "can be enjoyed even without the grand backdrop" as your goal?

Aoki: To tell you the truth, while I did know what Fate/stay night was, I didn't have a good understanding of it when I read Fate/Zero. I think reading the story under such circumstances, rather than say I understood it, it was more like the author made the need to understand it irrelevant. So I directed the anime with the idea of "since I can get it, the audience should be able to get it as well" in mind. I didn't place too much effort on explaining these things. I think this is the result of Urobuchi-sensei's excellent writing skills.

--Ah I see. It seems Fate/Zero has become popular not only among TYPE-MOON fans or anime fans, but a much larger audience.

Aoki: Now that you mention it, back in January when we were making the storyboard in a restaurant, a stranger came up and said "it was a blast watching Fate/Zero" (laughs). That person seemed to be someone in the music department, so it seems different types of people were able to enjoy our anime. It made me very happy.

I propose to ANN (as I do not know any other outlet who is able to) to please reach out at the next opportunity to primary source to clarify this issue. Fans repeat the question of view order repeatedly online and this has become a very divisive topic of debate within our community. The preferred source would be Kinoku Nasu, as he is the principle creator of Fate/Stay Night and was likewise involved the animated series' production. But other primary sources can include TYPE-MOON (Takashi Takeuchi) or Ufotable staff (Ei Aoki, Takahiro Miura, or Tomonori Sudō). Please remember to clarify this rather than provide articles that are basically opinion pieces and help resolve this issue for our community.

Hi there,

Your post was brought to my attention. First, Kevin Cormack's recommendations are his opinion, so please don't assume they are a definitive or authoritative source on whether a viewer should watch the Fate/Zero or Fate/Stay Night anime (or book/visual novel) first. It is merely his personal recommendation, not a matter of "it should be done this way because X person said Y."

Unfortunately, Kinoku Nasu is a very busy individual, as are all creators in Japan. It is unlikely we'll be able to ask this specific inquiry to him in the near future outside of a much larger interview scenario.

Readers are welcome to take Kevin's advice or start with the first release of Fate/Stay Night and then view Fate/Zero.

In my personal opinion, it really does not matter what approach viewers take.

There are benefits to either option. Personally, I saw the DEEN anime adaptation and then watched Zero. I didn't have any problems following the story from this angle. I was able to appreciate certain elements because I was familiar with Fate/Stay Night in general.

That is not the purpose of the article, nor was it the primary motivation behind commissioning the article. Editorial publishes opinions (OPs) and features (EDs). Please familiarize yourself with the term "OP/ED" rather than make demands of how the site operates.
