While I don't consider this series top-level entertainment, I enjoyed what it did quite a bit and felt it distinguished itself with its meticulous construction of a magic system from the ground up rather than giving the protagonist shortcuts. It's also one of the rare series to make a first encounter with a goblin convincingly scary and some revelations towards the end raise a LOT of questions about how the world came to be what it is in its present day, with magic not even understood as a concept even though the potential for it clearly exists.

I'd grade this one a solid B overall and will definitely watch a second season if one gets made.
