The first episode was solid fun. The contrast between the cynical Yashiro and the in justice believing newbie Aki made for some good banter and the show does not seem to have an issue with taking out some baddies. Setting wise I am intrigued by futuristic heroes/bounty hunters and demon kings duking it out. That one dude on the wanted poster looks like an eldritch monster btw. |

When I first saw that sailor moon wannabe in the opening scene, I groaned. But, I agree that the anime turned out to be surprisingly fun. I don't think the show is particularly well made, but it's not particularly poorly made either, and the strange mix of low brow humor and urban horror and magic girl spirit is more entertaining than it ought to be.
The closest things I've seen to this show personally are Hinamatsuri and an anime called Garo - the Vanishing Line I'll save it a spot on my watch card next week. |

Ah, yes, the latest entry in the Crusty Dude paired with Cute Young Girl - or in this case, Cute Young Girls - genre. A classic set-up. I agree it looks like it's going to be fun. Not sure how a student is gonna come up with 20 million yen, but I guess we'll see.

I think it's the way that the earnest, almost frenzied attitude of Best-Buy Sailor Moon contrasts with the MC's down-on-his-luck loser routine that gives the anime a little extra punch.

To some extent I've seen this show before, but it's not swamped the industry like some other tropes have, so I'm enjoying it.
I'm primarily annoyed by the translation of yuusha to "Brave" rather then "Hero," since the whole Demon King thing suggests Hero is more appropriate. |

I like that the fights and situations feel tactical despite there being supernatural abilities. That goes particularly in regards to the demon lord fight, tanking hits and just powering up does not seem to be the way to victory. Yashiro's ability seems very suited for that tactical approach though he still clearly has his limits. Aki's ability is a surprise in that it does not really suit her. Also of note is that the demon lord was surprised by his mutation and that using E3 really tests your self control. |

I was a little thrown that Aki has apparently been hearing the MC's thoughts this whole time and still considering him a potential master with the same cheerful enthusiasm.. I've been replaying the narration in my head, and I don't recall it sounding too complimentary or encouraging. But I guess it's not just surface thoughts - she can probably sense the inner self beneath those thoughts or something like that, the same quality that led the MC to throw himself over those two braves to protect them...why, he's just a big old tsundere teddy bear...
The show's strange blend of shounen type humor and grittier urban fantasy elements is still highly watchable for me. |

I don't think she can hear him all the time, just when she's under the E3 influence? So at least now he can know when she's eavesdropping on his thoughts.

Oh, right, that makes sense. Well, okay, giving a middle schooler a drug and sending her out to fight demons doesn't really make sense, but by anime standards it's almost basic logic. It's still a little strange to me that of the three young braves, it's the one who can read minds who seems to be the most naive and idealistic. You'd think she'd have gotten her cynic on after getting exposed to the complexities of human nature. I don't think most people are evil, but I hope everyone is a mix of angers, small kindnesses, insecurities, hopes, desires, petty jealousies or else I'm a freak. Then again, if she only reads minds during fights and thinks her opponents are the embodiment of evil... Hmmn. |

After episode 3 I fully understand why Yashiro is as cynical/cranky as he is. He was not bragging about being a legendary Brave, the issue is it making him a walking target. That means having to constantly move and makes it really hard to hold down a steady job since trouble will arrive sooner or later. I do think he makes for a good teacher with his street smarts though, the second half of the episode showcased that. I wonder if the roundtable leader could not have easily hired a couple of skilled Braves to protect his daughter. |

Yeah, the MC did come across as less seedy and more like someone with a legit reason to be bitter and burned.
Kind of feels like Teleport Ninja Girl understands our MC better than her friends Sailor Psychic and Bed Head Moon. And no, I haven't learned their names yet - I'm still trying to keep up with 27 anime - and yes, I am too lazy to take the ten seconds it would consume to look it up. Twin Pincer Lockjaw dude seems like an interesting villain. He's a drama major, but he's surprisingly cautious and pragmatic behind the rhetoric. I guess my real question is whether the same territory overlord who sent Twin Pincer Lockjaw is also the source of this experimental new drug they were talking about. |

Of the three girls I now consider Aki to be the least suited to being a Brave. Yukine can be ruthless when needed and she has shown that she can adapt rather easily. We have not seen much of Saera yet but she seems like the enthusiastic brawler type. That leaves Aki who is very set in her delivering justice ways, which like Yashiro said often leads to an early grave. |

@Smurky I'm wondering if it was the death of Aki's father that convinced Yashiro that good braves die young. If he and Yashiro were friends, it might explain Aki's insistence on becoming Yashiro's apprentice.
It might also be the shove needed to make Yashiro become their trainer already. I appreciate that the show didn't have Yashiro just do an about face at the end of episode 2 and have him do a cheesy "Here we go, I'm your new trainer" last line, but now having the plot come up with new excuses to get him involved with the trio is starting to become equally problematic. As for Aki - best buy Sailor Moon is growing on me. At first her starry eyed (literally) idealism annoyed me a bit, but I don't think her bravery is empty now. Part of that is because of her ability to read minds. If she'd walked away after knowing those girls wanted help...see what I mean? I think it's the fact that she's headed on a path of crazy risks and self-sacrifice that has me wincing in sympathy. |

I agree but part of it is also that she is not very flexible in her approach. Besides not being able to ignore injustice she is a rule stickler and being a Brave is not exactly a job that fits well with that. Take the example of looting corpses, Yukine was almost instantly on board, I have a hard time picturing Aki doing the same. The name of the father not being mentioned does seem likely to be a plot point. Would be sensible for it leading to Yashira becoming a proper teacher since next week he is on an adventure with Saera.
