This anime is a conventional fantasy that went a bit strange, and I think that's a good thing. It's certainly avoided the trap of instant OPosity or a protagonist who everyone worships on sight, and that's a good thing IMHO.
I sometimes find the maid annoying, but I understand that her offbeat weirdness actually saved Kunon from an environment that might have been overwhelming if he listened to common sense and cared about what people thought too much. And his strange tangents (along with the way the princess goes right along with them) are more fun than the usual interactions. The absence of the usual harem tropes by episode 2 is also kind of refreshing. It feels like this anime isn't just going to be painting by the numbers even if the Imperial Prince is a fairly standard antagonist. And I'm glad to see an older brother who isn't a psychopath jealous of the MC's greatness (the standard route being demonstrated over in Noble Reincarnation). I like the poor shmuck saddled with keeping Kunon out of trouble, which is obviously going to be impossible, but impossible in a more fun way than the usual "Hello, next stepping stone to my path to awesomeness! Allow me to act blaise while I crush you the way I crush all of my problems, by throwing more of my overwhelming magic at them!" |

1+2:
While I have some issues with the first two episodes (the okay animation, the pacing, some source material cutting) it does a solid enough job of setting up the characters and the premise. That goes particularly for Kunon who is a bit of a weird one in that he is a magic fanatic while also a shallow/flashy gentleman. The other characters indeed avoid a lot of the common tropes you would expect to find. I always love series that go more in depth with magic than spells simply becoming bigger explosions so I am in despite some grumbles. |

Episode 3 is a fun surprise in that snooty prince Lyle did in fact not become an enemy. Kunon his unique bland of communication has made the prince a friend of sorts since the latter is so used to people being two faced and scheming. Jenie leaving makes sense since there is nothing left to teach (though you would think that having at least one offensive spell at the ready would be sensible). |

Well, it glided through the 3 episode rule with barely a ripple as far as I'm concerned. If the anime had everyone reacting to Kunon's cheeseball antics as if he were putting on the rizz, I probably wouldn't like it. But the fact that his goofball awkwardness leaves everyone with a slightly constipated expression (except the maid that taught him to be that way and his fiance, the latter which is fortunate) makes it funny to me.
I also like that the anime is three episodes in and he's still finding his way. His skill is acknowledged, but he isn't defeating dragons and creating mansions out of magic and byatch slapping the local champions left and right while everyone gives him a slackjawed ovation. He's creating animals out of semi-solid water. I like it. |

One of the reasons that I like the novels so much is that every mage is all about magic to an obsessive degree with no attention left for anything else. As long as it sounds interesting or fun they go for it consequences be damned. Episode 4 was a good showcase of that mindset. |

I have a feeling that a lot of people didn't give this anime a try because they figured it would be a bog standard fantasy. Which is a shame because it's fun.
The older sister seems destined to be getting Kunon in a lot of trouble, though not out of mean-spiritedness. If I'm getting this right, Kunon doesn't have as much raw power as a magician with a higher star ranking, but his creativity and degree of control are coming up with magical variations that more traditional sorcerers haven't seen before? |

More stars mean more raw mana to cast magic with but besides that everything does indeed come down to skill and creativity. You can use a bit of mana to cast a highly deadly spell due to it being so well crafted or creatively used. The more skilled the magician is the less important the amount of mana you have is relatively speaking.

Yeah, in video game terms, Kunon is never gonna be able to cast something like "Tsunami" or the -ga/-ja type spells for FF fans, because he just doesn't have enough MP and never will. But big and flashy isn't necessarily the best strategy, and his unique viewpoint (not that he can see
Jenie mentions it in ep 1 (around the 14 minute mark), but she's not allowed to teach him higher level/offensive spells, only the very basics, because he's a minor, and giving children the magical equivalent of unsupervised firearms access is just a really bad idea. Unrelated, but that poor maid who saw water Iko fall/float outside the window... |

The episode showed that using magic creatively is the mark of a great magician. I appreciate it since far too many series are only about having as much mana as possible and using it to throw giant spells around. Kunon being smart got him a snarky teacher who does seem pretty capable. Mirika meanwhile needs to level up her status since Kunon will only get more famous (or infamous). I get why minors are not allowed to learn offensive magic but given how curious/obsessive most magicians are and them being highly valuable... maybe having one self defense type magic would be worthwhile despite the risks. |

Ep 5: So there's a guy at the black tower who casually strides stairs up three steps at a time? Why are the steps so low? Anyway, Mr Spikey seems like a fun addition to the cast to bounce against Kunon. I have to say I don't have much idea what Mirika is supposed to do to advance her status, and what that even means.

Achievements I think. Right now she is the 9th princess which is a low position within the family and achievements wise she has nothing. Others will try to take Kunon away from her or get rid off her to do so.

So basically, until a villain shows up...and maybe even after that...every major character on the show is a huge goofus. Not that I'm complaining. I'm still enjoying the show, and I agree that the new tutor seems fun.
I'm a little curious about what the princess is going to do to level up |

It is a shame that the animation is so mediocre because the events on screen are good fun. The show manages to showcase what Kunon is doing while the years go by without it feeling too lengthy or too brief. That includes Zeonly teaching a lot by working him to the bone, visiting the royal mages to mess about and Mirika trying to level up. The final segment has Kunon finally being able to see but it appears that he might be seeing a little too much. |

I agree that the animation isn't on the same level as the anime here. Generally, this anime falls into the "quite fond of" category, but I will say that the end of today's (2/1/26) episode gave me a genuine case of the feels. If they'd really done something visually imaginative or even just pretty to capture what it must have been like when his world suddenly came in to view, it would have been even better.
