Oh my gosh, I had no idea that Ichi was written by the same person who did Iruma-Kun, let alone that she's writing them both at the same time. That takes a remarkable level of skill! It's tough as hell to create a hit shonen series, and Nishi just goes ahead and makes two at once. And meanwhile I'm so happy that Usazaki has found another successful series after the end of Act-Age, where her career took a brutal hit for reasons entirely beyond her control.
Ichi's art is so gorgeous, actually, that my biggest concern for this series is that I just hope the eventual anime lands a studio capable of translating that look to the screen.

This is such a great series, can't wait to see it animated in the future
I only recently discovered that the author Nishi also did Iruma-kun, so it's no surprise that the writing is of such a high quality.
I didn't know that the artist Ushizaki was the other half of the duo from act-age. Great to see she landed such a great gig after that and the artwork is amazing too

I pick which new Jump series I read mostly on vibes since the magazine is so aggressive at cutting stuff and it always sucks to get into a series that gets cut short or feeling that the series is just a razors edge from cancelation (Hima-Ten! has become a new favorite and I have much anxiety over the series future). As soon as I saw the cover for Jump the week Ichi dropped I knew I had to give it a shot though and it has been such a blast from the word go. The art is immaculate and the characters are a ton of fun and I'm not at all shocked that this series would be such a massive hit. Jump has been letting series cook for a bit longer than they used to before they get an anime, but I would not be surprised if we get an anime announcement before the year is done. Hopefully it ends up with a decent studio because it will easily become the next big thing if it can get JJK or Demon Slayer treatment.

I first found out about Ichi the Witch when I saw the volume 2 cover online. I thought it was a about a cute black witch with the cutest name ever. Imagine my disappointment when I started reading it and it was actually about your typical shonen protagonist with a demon inside of him.
Desscaras is easily the manga's biggest strength. The Majik system is also really fun, and there are moments of charm here and there. But for the most part, it's a fairly generic story with fairly generic characters.

I have appreciated the sense of humour* of this manga since the very first chapter. Ichi is a feral boy with a good heart, much like Desscaras deep down. They make a good team, and the artwork is excellent. Whenever a new series starts in Jump, I usually wonder if it will last; that did not happen with Ichi the Witch (as with Akane Banashi); I just wanted to read the next chapter.
However, I disagree with the idea that he is just 'another boy with a demon inside', because in this world, every major witch has one (or several) inside them. Ichi is only special because of his gender. Nishi and Usazaki are doing a good job dealing with the expected tropes of action battle series in the Shōnen Jump.

Yes and no. While all the witches have "demons" inside them, theirs are a lot more tame compared to Uroro. We haven't seen what Bakugami is like after he was captured, but Uroro is special. That said I don't think "dense dude with a heart of gold that has a monster inside him" is a bad trope to continue to go to. It's a classic for a reason and I've enjoyed what they've been doing with it especially recently.
Man, that bit was fantastic.

None of the Majiks from other witches we've seen act as antagonistic forces to their owners. And I don't think the author has done anything interesting with the inner demon trope.
Also, it's actually funny how quickly Uroro faded into irrelevance. He's introduced as the biggest and meanest Majik there ever was, until they introduce the next biggest and meanest Majik there ever was (for real this time) and the story kinda forgets about Uroro. They tried to pull him back into the spotlight a couple of chapters ago. Not only did it not work, but the dialogue was so painfully in the nose I was just waiting for him to say "Guys, look, I'm not a fraud."

I have been reading this (and Empyreal Cabinet!) on the Manga Plus app and I absolutely love it. I can’t wait to buy to buy the physical edition and hopefully to see this animated someday soon!
