Hey, is Piglet the Grate still around, or did they rage quit after the dearth of healing slice of life anime last season? I just thought this one might be Piggle's can of Red Bean soup.

Anyhow, the anime is basically the Snack Attack of the Killer Moe Maid, but I didn't hate it. Watching a shy, inoffensive person experience a strange new world through their taste buds is a tried and true anime plot, and I wasn't bored. Yet.

I suspect that this is another one of those anime that will live or die on the basis of the supporting cast who get introduced in the next few episodes, otherwise things might get a bit too formulaic.

Episode 1

SoL is not my favourite genre these days, but throw in the food subgenre and you may get me to hang around. I'm not quite sure why the poor gal needs to live in Japan for a year while her employer's mansion is being rebuilt... no accommodations in the UK? Also, how is she making a living? Oh well, at least she doesn't have amnesia.

I love slice of life anime and I am always in for delicious food yet the first episode (yes I know, I am a tad late) has me unsure. The episode consisted of 5 segments and while there was some character interaction it was mostly eating something and getting information on that something. I can easily imagine that becoming repetitive and given that the episodes are full length I hope that there will be enough interaction between characters to have it be more than 90% eating.

I watched episode 2 and I agree that there's not much there. i think the repetition thing is because the MC is almost completely one note, so the rest of the cast has to fill in the blanks, so to speak. The grandma with the glinting eyes is alright, but the dead-eyed student didn't add much. The work exhausted neighbor has the most potential IMHO. If the rest of the anime maintains this pace and dynamic, the timing of when I watch it will be key. It's definitely a flop down on the couch when braindead and mildly stressed out or wanting to go to sleep sort of an affair for me.

From now on I will watch an episode whenever I am in the mood for one instead of when there is a new one. Like you said Edjwald there is not much substance to be found. It is charming (especially the fresh bread bit was) but it is always about Suzume eating something and that sometimes leading to some interaction with other characters. Said interaction is rather basic too.

I watched episode 3 after doing yard work for a couple of hours - finally had some real spring weather in my parts - and it was nice. The introduction of the blonde might also stir the pot a little.

Miss blonde maid will likely be a bit critical of how Suzume is taking care of herself. She would not wrong given that walking around in maid clothes while it is hot outside and with not a single drink with you is not smart. That is not even mentioning the not cooking thing.

@Smurky Turkey. What do you mean the not cooking thing? Suzume just learned to make instant lemonade this week!

I will admit though, this may be the first time I've seen a "foodie" anime that was mostly about food bought from convenience stores and vending machines.

I thought the hoodlum looking guy who turned out to be a bird lover was a good touch. I enjoyed this weeks episode just fine though the high school kid/pseudo romantic interest is only slightly less of a nonentity than that similar mouth breather in Wash it All Away last season.

I'm a little curious about this "Master." Suzume hardly ever leaves the mansion at home, and the master's been worried about her, so the master sends a summer maid outfit for her to wear 7 days a week on all occasions? Seems like a very strange subculture to me.

Good thing of you to mention, I do not think that Suzume has cooked a single thing yet. Unless you indeed count things like making some instant lemonade. Character wise Suzume is building up her support group/family including several neighbors and Ricotta who tries to hide how fond of Suzume she is. The romance seems to be something that can be easily ignored.

Never underestimate the strict life of a maid Edjwald, you need to have that uniform on, always.

Best episode thus far, the balance between slice of life fun and delicious food being on display was a bit more even. I also liked that several of the characters got to know one another and it is starting to feel like a proper group of friends. Finally, there was Suzume cooking or something that came close...ish to it.

Are you still watching @Edjwald? I ask because we got not one but two segments of actual proper cooking this week. No candy or such, proper food from a stove. Those sweet potatoes did not look bad either.
