Having read a bit of the manga in the past, it is as disgusting as it sounds. It is not a show to make smoking seem fun, very much not so in fact. Despite that I will watch it, the whole thing is such a mess that it is hard to look away from it.

The premiere captures the sheer rancidness and disgusting ''charm'' of the manga very well. Other shows have had degenerate main characters before but Chainsmoker Cat is among the very top of them (take that as a possible good or bad thing). It is also hard to know how to feel at times because while the situations are played as jokes it is also possible to just feel sad/depressed about the life Yani has. I will keep watching because like I said: it is hard to look away from. |

Move over CGDCT, I guess it's time for cat-girls-doing-degen-things. I'm surprised that I laughed more in this one than any of the other new shows. I really can't guess what you're supposed to do with a directionless character like this for 12 whole episodes and I'm willing to find out. I hope it's something weird.

Yeah, no. Virtually every single frame of the episode (which I did not finish) repulsed me. I'm the opposite of smurky: I can't NOT look away.

For me, grossout humour in an animated context really needs an element of surprise, shock ect. It has to contrast to amuse me.
For a recent example, when Aimi in Kirio Fan Club shoves her arm down her throat to vomit, its (very!) funny because its sudden and left field. I got through half the episode. I anticipated essentially every gag, because it always hits the same button of trying to max out the grossness, theres no disparity. I was not amused and its not for me. I feel like even though its "smoking negative" formally its hard for me to see anyone enjoying this who doesn't enjoy smoking in some manner (whether as a smoker or finding smoking kind of transgressive and appealing in theory, at least in others). |
