How exactly does the manga go along with the anime? It is only 2 volumes and pretty much manga that is two volumes is based off the anime such Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, Abenobashi, etc. I also know there are novels of it so is the manga based off the novels? Or did it just come out as 2 volumes and then turned into an anime? The Encyclopedia says the manga was adapted from the anime, but in wikipedia it syas the manga came out first.

The Wikipedia entry states that the novels were the original source, so the manga was adapted from the novels. Also, after reading further down the entry, it states that "[t]he anime series had adapted the storyline until 'The Volume of being a Spirit - part 3.'" So, it seems that the novels were the source material for both adaptations.
