Does anyone think Macross 7 might make it to US shores? i saw it fansubbed but it's one of those anime series I'd love to collect as a boxset.

The only reason Mac7 hasn't been released here are the rdiculously nebulous music rights, which are owned by many different companies. The figure for the aging series is in the several millions, thanks to the music costs. Most companies cannot afford to license a series that isn't a sure-fire best seller for that kind of money.

Unless the music rights are all bought up by a single company in Japan and sold to a US bidder for a low consolidated price, we won't see it here any time soon.

one could always buy the R2 LDs... (were there ever any bootleg LD companies?) or the R2 DVDs.

No subs, but that shouldn't stop the true fan.

Normally I'd agree, and having lived in Japan, I don't need the subs. However, my wallet is lean.... R2 dvds are expensive and have expensive shipping...

Anytime I buy pirates (all two times in 10 years of fandom), I always buy with the intent of replacing them with the real thing when they are licensed in the States.

Has Mac 7 been "digisubbed" yet? Bear in mind (COOKIE I SWEAR UH-HUH) I'm not asking for a link to a torrent file or whatever, just wondering if it exists.

Occasionally you'll see various digisubbers tackle older projects as pennance for speeding through whatever was on TV Tokyo earlier that afternoon. Mac 7 just seems like a likely candidate for that sort of thing.

Saw it the other day listed on one of the torrent sites being subbed by [EDITED - Bootleg group. -C]
So atleast its outthere and a Digisub of a unliscened show is alot more ethicical then a bootleg.

I don't know why the music would be so expensive, when it sucks so much in the first place. Anyway, the Japanese music industry almost makes the RIAA look like saints.

I have the Bootleg DVD set (TV series), and I have to say it is not too bad, but the subtitles are a little weird at times.

Although this may seem like blasphemy, but how about just screw the j-music and the original japanese langauge, and get an *above average* american music group and english dub cast and put it on TV (adult swim?) or DVD in the US? At least that way, we can see it here. Since the music is not being used, that would bypass that license, wouldn't it?

We don't know if that's really feasible or not. Unless the voice of a singer is almost the same with the voice of the VA, it will not fit at all.

There is an album called macross 7 american, which supposedly is a good deal of the M7 songs in English, but the singers are....well....let's just say I'd rather listen to your average boy-band more than them.

Also, I have yet to hear a band out there whose songs are like those from Fire Bomber.

Yeah, I can't really say there is anyone I listen too that sound like them, they are a bit more positive and less "aggressive" then most US rock bands.

Although, if you are doing an English dub, maybe it would be better to have a more of an aggressive band (decent nu-metal perhaps?) to do the music. Also, if possible, have the actual singers do the voices of the characters as well.

There is another possibilty, how about a "supergroup", i.e. get a bunch of different musicians from other bands together and have them do the music, instead of it being one specific group.

But alas, this is all a pipe dream, the likelyhood of any US distributor taking this route is nil at best.

Oh dear, that is truely frightening. Especially if HG reuse the same RT cast...
