is there enough substance to warrant getting the books if i have seen all of Karin.
in the case of, say, Midori Days... there was lots of comedy in the manga that wasnt in the anime.
can i expect the same from Karin? or will i be disappointed simply reading the anime script in panel form.

The Karin manga & anime are different enough to warrant getting both, I'd say. The manga has several different stories and characters, and the novels present sidestories that aren't even hinted at in the anime. Plus if you didn't like Winner Sinclair, you won't find him in the manga. There's a good chance that the anime ending was invented for the anime, as the manga doesn't show signs of ending yet.
