This is a general discussion thread on the Netflix DVD rental and online streaming service. It is also a thread to mention titles you have added to your "saved" that you would like ANN members to collectively add to theirs as described in the following paragraphs. Please keep discussions limited to anime and anime related live-action movies only.

(original opening post): I love using Netflix as my primary source for watching anime. But unfortunately, they seem to be missing alot of series, or parts of a series. I have many discs in my "saved" section that have been there for probably more than a year. I've sent in countless of title recommendations to them for the stuff I can't find as well.

Anyway, I was hoping that we can have people maybe list some anime's or some of the discs that they're missing here, and maybe we can collectively place them in our "saved" section, or send it to them as a title request.

Here's the current list that we've gathered in this thread (updated 7/14/2010):

You mean like list titles we're missing ourselves that we want to watch and send requests to Netflix to get them to carry them? Am I understanding that clearly?

For the most part yes. Netflix has many holes in their inventory that leaves many of the series that they have incomplete. If you have a Netflix subscription, you may notice that you have a "saved" section at the bottom of your rental queue. When they have a series (e.g. Cowboy Bebop 6 disc series), and say they don't currently have a copy of disc 4 (maybe all of them in their inventory were lost or broken), making renting disc 4 from them impossible, you can add disc 4 to your "saved" section. The more people that have this disc in they're "saved" section, the better the chance they will purchase a replacement disc 4 to become available for renting.

Also the more people that request a title or series that is not in they're inventory or catalogging all together, the better the chance they will purchase some copies of that title or series to become available for viewing.

Ah ok that makes sense. I always wondered why some titles showed up as SAVE and didn't go into my normal queue. I'll have to check mine out and see what titles are in there.

That's the reason why I left Netflix for Rentanime. You don't have to worry about missing volumes and I can get classic series that are on Netflix. Also Rentanime also carries different version of series. Much like Naruto where they have the uncut and the broadcast version available on DVD.

Most of the series that have missing discs will probably never be replaced and many of the ones I would want are probably out-of-print anyway. It would make more sense to just buy a used copy and then resell it when you're done. At least that's the way I see it. Rentanime.com would be another option that seems to make more sense for serious anime fans.

The problem is rentanime takes twice as long to get to you and receive returns. Plus if you want to rent anything else besides anime you're SOL. I actually a smaller plan at netflix and a small one at animelane (they have my martial arts movies).

I'm talking about titles they have in and a normal time frame between return and receiving a new dvd. I'm sure you knew that. Wink

When I found out about rentanime, I was very interested in switching. Then I found out they only have one distribution center, IN FLORIDA! It couldn't be farther away from me and still be in this country. I'll stick with Netflix since I live in the same town as my closest distribution center.

well that's enough to turn me off. Although over 90% of my Netflix quere is anime, I still use Netflix for other movies and shows, like Band of Brothers Very Happy Plus, I tend to be rather impatient, and waiting on things to arrive can prove aggravating to me, one of the reasons I avoid ordering things online.

Weird, because I rented that one through Netflix with no problem not all that long ago.

They're still missing Black Cat vol. 1, which irritates me since I've been wanting to check that series out since it first came out.
They are also missing Tenchi Universe vol 7 & 8, I already own this series, but I'll gladly help out with others who are trying to Netflix it.

One thing to remember though, is that this problem is not just limited to anime titles; Netflix is missing other movies/shows/ect. non anime-related.
But this could very well be a 'demand-priority' issue, if enough people request a title, they should come around. Wink

Well, then it looks like this is an issue between you and netflix. Of course, if you're already married to a single supplier I guess you'll just have to take whatever they decide to give you, which doesn't sound very promising so far. Maybe you can take a look at animelane or greencine. If that fails there's always ebay and half.ebay.com where you can buy used and then resell whatever you no longer need.

As for myself I've been on and off with neflix since back when they carried blue movies and only came out of California. Needless to say they've changed a lot over the years but they still don't seem to take customer comments or complaints very seriously. There's been a few lawsuits against them but the pay off is always peanuts (free upgrade to one extra disc for one month, etc.) so I tend to ignore them.

I have currently suspended my netflix account so I can spent time watching what I have here, however I will pick it up again, and when I do, I would happily put those in my list if it were to help you out. I was planning on trying one of the other anime rental trials first to see how it compared to netflix, however I loved how fast I got anime from Netflix, and there wasn't too many they didn't have that I wanted to see. I know they don't have vol 5 of Nadesico. They also didn't have vol 3-5 of Hoop Days (Dear Boys) although it seems like this was released as single disks for vol 1-2 and then box set afterwords, so if you bought the singles, you would have to rebuy them in the set to finish series. Maybe I am wrong, it seems so odd, however from what I have looked at, that is the way it is. It's isn't the most awesome anime, but I still wanted to finish it.
I can't remember what else was in my list. I ended up seeing Black Cat vol 1 from another rental co as I know Netflix didn't have that, which they have no good excuse to not have. I can understand something like Nadesico better as it's OOP, so it's excusable, but not the first vol of a new series.
I used Greencine for awhile, and liked it, however coming from California to me and return, it was 7-8 days for a 1 disk turn-around. Too long for where I live.

Same here. I took a look at RentAnime and when I saw it was going to take that long, I decided to stick with Netflix, since I can rent other movies and shows from them, like Battlestar Galactica. Very Happy I'm rather impatient too, save for the ordering online part. I order online all the time, as it's more convenient for me.

I don't have any saved movies in my queue, but I did notice recently that Netflix is missing discs 6 and 8 of Gasaraki.

They are also missing Perfect Blue.

EDIT: Fixed a typo

The Netflix turnaround is really fast, their is a distribution center that is a 20 minute drive from my house. So basically they receive it the day after I mail it and mail it to me the same day, I end up getting a replacement 2 days after I drop it in the mail. It's very fast service and for the most part they have a good selection, I haven't had much trouble aside from GTO. Plus, I enjoy regular movies as well and being able to get them with the same service is great.
