I read in TV Guide today, that George Lucas has 40 episodes of Clone Wars done in a CG animated style ready for television that he wants to air around the 9pm hour and not on a kiddy channel. But because because of the program's unique style; it's animated but it's not for kids nor is it an adult comedy, he's having a hard time finding a channel to air it on. I was thinking, "Wow, that's sorta like the problems anime is having!"So I was wondering, if Lucas can get Clone Wars on tv, do you think it could pave the way for more anime to be shown?

Well, that is definitely an exciting prospect, especially if people with lots of money and influence are willing to stick out an arm and a leg to try to promote something they love. I can't see this particular instance as being the "springboard" for anime on American television unless Lucas manages to promote it insanely and it actually becomes a hit show, in which case many people will (re)examine anime. Chances of that are slim as most Americans would rather tune in, in the words of David Roberts, to the tenth season of America's Hottest Anorexic. It's a start, anyway.

Maybe, but I doubt it.
George Lucas can probably get a 9pm slot simply because, he's George Lucas, AND he's selling Star Wars, which has the massive advantage of being a well-established franchise with a rabidly loyal fanbase (notwithstanding the debacle that was the prequel trilogy). Primetime American TV is notoriously hard to break into for ANY series, let alone something that's shipped over an ocean, with the baggage of an entirely different cultural background. The Star Wars project may well get that timeslot, but anime probably won't, since network executives may well conclude that if they show anime at that timeslot, they'll lose the ratings game. But then, we can dream, can't we? |

Man, sometimes it seems like I'm the only person who actually loves the prequels just as much as anything else Star Wars, but I know there's a ton of others out there, judging by box office stats. Everyone I know physically loves it, it's only on the internet where I see some people actually don't for some reason.
Anyhow the first two seasons of Clone Wars rocked so I definitely would not be adverse to more of it. As to whether it will bring more anime into the limelight, probabally not. |

Okay wait... Wasn't this show on Teletoon (Canadian T.V) a couple of years back?

No. You're probably thinking of the '2-D' Clone Wars series of shorts from Genndy Tartakovsky, produced for the Cartoon Network and also acquired by Teletoon. This thread's about an entirely new series that hasn't aired anywhere yet. But the subject header and original post are a bit misleading ... there's plenty of 'anime on TV,' especially in Japan ... what I suspect is intended to be conveyed is (a) adult-oriented anime series that are (b) translated and aired on TV in the U.S. That's a very specific subsection within the broad category of 'anime on TV' that may be experiencing problems ... but anime in general certainly isn't. |

I meant there isn't any anime on network or regular cable except Cartoon Network. At least not where I live.

I like Episode I and Episode III, scripting and acting problems aside, but II...I just can't like. But yeah, the people who hate the Prequel Trilogy are much louder on the internet wherever you go. |

I don't know a whole lot about how U.S. channels operate, but isn't the Sci-Fi Channel available on cable for you? It airs 'Noein,' 'Tokko' and 'Street Fighter II V'. Also, what about IFC? And then there are *ugh* the shows on Fox's 4Kids block .... But yeah, basically what you're saying is the exact point I was making; you weren't talking about anime and TV in general, you were talking about anime on TV in your 'hood. Personally, I've had no problem with access to PG-13-ish, serious-minded anime series, as I rent 'em through Zip ... so have you tried Netflix yet? It may be better money spent than on your cable bill .... |

I have to wonder how. This series wouldn't be an "anime" anyways. Don't see anyone else around referring to it as such. It has to be Japanese after all, right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Clone_Wars_%28TV_series%29 Nevertheless, it is good to see some more Star Wars -- as the clone wars were outright skipped within the movie trilogies (and rightfully so). A 100+ episode CGI animated series will be very interesting.
Well, will people tune in because it's animated or because it's Star Wars? I'm willing to bet -- it's because it's Star Wars. If the story isn't Star Wars, this animation project has that 20/80 chance of succeeding. The Star Wars label will increase those odds to 50/50. Seeing that a member of the Avatar: Last Airbender crew, Dave Filoni, is on board this project. It's in good hands. So, I'll be looking forward to this -- along with General Grievous sporting some 4-armed saber skills. === Now, to answer this thread's question: No, it won't pave the way for more anime on TV; but it may make some kind of impact in the way general animation is perceived. Maybe. We'll just see how well executed this series will turn out. |
